Our offense without Bennett?

The blocking TE from KC, Pope, could be an alternative if we want to go the FA route.

Didn't we average one whole yard more per carry when MB was on the field? Tough to replace.

How do you see our offense evolving without Martellus Bennett who received a great deal of snaps? (I'm not positive how many, so if anyone has that number I would appreciate the input).

Will Fiammetta have a larger role? Will Phillips inherit Bennetts snaps? Will Witten be asked to stay in and block more? Will we move more towards 3-4 receiver sets? Perhaps I'll get my wish and we'll incorporate the pro set with Felix Jones and DeMarco Murray. I would love to see some option between the two of them, similar to what they were doing in Denver. At least as a wrinkle in our offense. It would be awesome to see a pro set with Fiammetta, Jones, and Murray.

Good question.

Yeah maybe some more pro set type stuff, like they said they would use. but then when OL started getting hurt, and just didn't pan out. They went to using the extra TE for blocking and that may have linited the offense.

Which it is why it shows the importance of fixing this OL.

We instantly upgrade our receiving threat with John Phillips. In the e d the 2 TE offense gets better.

I would like to see Jermey Parnell get some snaps at TE. He was a college basketball player and has very quick feet for an OT. It seems that he could do what MartyB did...be a good blocker and occasionally catch a short pass. He is going to be active on game day as the swing tackle anyway.

THIS IS THE POST OF THE DAY!!!

I totally agree. The 2-TE offense is really an extension of the tackle-elegible formation, where one of your tackles opposite the TE can block or pass. So use of a 2-TE set works best when the opposite TE, now in Place of that eligible tackle can block and pass.

When Dallas got Bennett they thought they finally got that TE who can block and pass. But Bennett has proved thus far that he's merel a blocking TE who can occasionally catch a pass, but can't be relied upon for it.

Did you know also that Bennett was the team's emergency OT the last two seasons? If you ever wondered why the team went so thin on OT depth as of late this is why. And this is why Bennett is expendable. now - because he's a glorified OT in a 2-TE set.

Until Fiametta came along Bennett still had value as a blocking TE. But with Fiametta in place to assume that responsibility, it's dumb to have a 2-TE offens featuring a second blocker. This is why having John Phillips take Bennet's spot provides an upgrade to the offense - because now Dallas can finally run the 2-TE set how it's intended to be run, with a second receiving TE.

EDIT: my post directly above this one explains why our offense gets better with John Phillips over Bennett.

I'm hoping the offense will be better without him, but I have concerns about someone stepping up and being able to block as well as him. Bennett doesn't want to be here, so I would rather see him go. Also, he's a goofball. I question whether he can be serious and disciplined enough to ever be great. I follow him on Twitter, and he says some of the most moronic things I've ever seen in my life. It makes me think he's got a screw loose or something.

In a 1-TE set you have Witten who can catch and block, with a FB (Fiametta) in the backfield, whose twice the blocker that Bennett is. And in a 2-TE set, the second TE needs to be a recover first. Bennett isn't; John Phillips is. Essentially, between Fiametta and Phillips, the blocking stays intact, but the receiving greatly improves. So losing Bennett amounts to an offensive system upgrade.

He was an underrated blocker and will need to be replaced.

Dallas Clark just got released. Maybe an option.

He was AWFUL last year. Dropping passes, his blocking was pathetic. 33 years old. No thanks.

Frankly, that whole team was a mess last year.

Yeah, he was an underrated CANCER too. I'm glad he is gone and this team will be much better off without him too!

I think the success of the fullback last year was something Garrett has been craving and we'll see more of Fiammetta next season. So Phillips will get less snaps than Bennett did.

In fact, if we had had Fiammetta from the start and he had not gotten "hurt," Bennett would have seen less snaps than Bennett did because our backs were more successful with Fiammetta in as a blocker.

Martellus Bennett was an extension of the offensive line, and his run blocking will be missed and difficult to replace. Bennett was among the very, very best, at his position, in run blocking and pass protection.

I know as a big Felix Jones fan, I will miss his contribution, because I've seen Bennett's significant impact in the running game. Losing Bennett, in an already very shaky offensive line, isn't the best news, imo.

it will be tough to gauge what the offense will look like without Bennett, primarily his blocking ability.

There's no doubt that he helped the left side. If Smith can be what we want him to be on that side, the loss may not be as noticable (Phillips is a decent enough blocking TE). I think that it really depends on how well Smith and whoever plays LG play.
