I’m not about to blame the zebras for our problems. Some of you just look for excuses.

Instead of adopting a quick pass game with variations of screens like a real offensive coach/coordinator......MM and Kellen will do nothing to help smh

I'm glad he did. Dude is going to be a monster. Moving him inside will help with the penalties.
If we had anyone other than Philbin coaching him, I would be happier. It appears Smith is big, strong and nasty but he does have a tendency to hold and once you get that reputation,(see Connor Williams) you get flagged on the iffy calls. Those really can turn a game around in a bad way. We not only make more penalties than any other team but they come at the absolute worst time. Like on a 56 yard attempt that was missed and redone at 51 and made. Typical Dallas issue and the dude you did it was the new guy Fowler. He is picking up the bad habit. Discipline is learned and it can only be learned if the coaching staff makes it a real priority. Not bringing in ice cream trucks for a bunch of millionaires.

"Reputation" hardly matters when we're talking about the Cowboys. Refs have their flags half out before we snap the ball. It's an absolute joke every year. Now, Smith did clearly hold a couple times, but so what? At least he pancaked guys, unlike some of our guys who just take penalties while playing poorly. And he's playing on a team that can't discipline players, so...just gotta hope he fixes the problem himself.

Was it a good idea to draft the most penalized player in the NCAA when you want to cut down on penalties? He already has 2 holding penalties in his first game against practice squad and backups, what is going to happen when he goes up against the starters?

We're going to find out pretty quickly if this was a good move.
If you have a team with a lot of penalties (or pelaties as Emmitt Smith called them) then drafting a guy who gets a lot of penalties is that last thing people expect you to do. So we got one up on the league on that one.

The Zebras love throw flags.
Zebras love to throw flags at teams that have a reputation for sloppy plays.
The Cowboys are the poste child for sloppy and stupid penalties at his the worst time.
Tyler Smith was a penalty machine in College. Lead division 1 in penalties.
The Zebras were all over him last night.
The continuation of this embarrassing reputation will sink this team
McCarthy has to employ some of Jimmy’s tactics. You mess up, you are of the team
Otherwise this is going to be a continuation of the last four year. Longhorn w just an appetizer for the strip shirted.

I think you are overstating this, last season Dallas lead the league in penalties yet most season we are middle of the pack in terms of penalties.

His reputation is earned, he holds, bottom line . It has nothing to do with who we are as a team or franchise, there is no bias.
He needs lots of work on technique but he sure has the physical ability
I don’t know that most refs even know who he is, let alone how many penalties he got in college
At tackle what I seen in college was penalties when he got out of position and those for being way too aggressive
The technique part he should get better at
The aggression part is harder. You want his aggressive nature but you also want to contain it just a bit

I'm sorry, but I think this constant narrative that I keep reading on here of a rookie's "reputation" from College impacting how NFL refs call penalties on him seems ridiculous. Half the refs probably don't even know who he is. The idea that refs are focused on this just because Cowboys fans were after the draft is just puzzling.

Some? It's a lot more than some. But that's how nervous nellies roll. The fear of losing is a big deal to them so if you can have an excuse built in even before the game is played, it makes the hard landing of disappointment softer. The funny part is some of them chide the "doom and gloomers" while forecasting nothing but doom with the refs. Both stances are to guard against being let down again.

You know I think that’s a point most miss
I too didn’t realize
But 2019 and 2020 we were middle of the pack in penalties

It’s both. That’s the point of the OP. Smith has a rep. The Cowboys have a rep. Both are watched.

I get that last season was unacceptable high number of penalties, However I think looking at 1 season is not a trend.

What rep? We lead the league last season outside of that we have been middle of the pack in terms of penalties. How is that a reputation for penalties?

We’ve been in the top five for several years. The timing of these penalties is oddly coincidental as well. In addition, The Cowboys are the most polarizing team in the league—most hyped, analyzed, scrutinized, and the most resented. Dallas falling flat in prime time is a rating$ grabber.

LOL, that is utter BS. Stats of penalties do not support that claim. Last several years this team has been middle of the pack.

When you're not good enough, you hold. You jump offsides. You interfere. You false start. You hit the quarterback late.

In pro sports, you do whatever you need to cover for your lack of ability, and hope you don't get caught.

Or the money stops.

Coach Montgomery, Tyler's coach in college, explains penalties.

"Nah, I think he'll be fine in that regard," Montgomery said of the penalties. "I will say this, and I'm a little biased so I'm going to throw this part in there ... Tyler plays so physical that at times, he got some penalties called against him that weren't penalties. (The refs) saw somebody on the ground and they were like, "well, something must have happened so I just threw a flag there.' He was that dominant and that physical of a guy."
