Smith just needs to learn better technique, I thought he played pretty well, one of those flags on him was highly questionable at best and the other the defender got under his pad level and his arms were outside the shoulder pads, he had one miss direction read on fourth down......He's a very strong young man and uses leverage very well, he has man strength at his young age and I think when he becomes technically sound, he's going to be a very good player inside..

The Cowboys' reputation proceeds them, so Smith's holding issues, whatever they are, actually don't matter. The flags will fly no matter who is out there, just as they did in 2021 when Smith was in Tulsa.

Without actually seeing Smith's two penalties against Denver, I can say this kid is so strong that officials are thinking he is holding when he is actually not. Even his coaches in college said the same thing.

Put it this way, every head coach from every other team that plays the Cowboys is going to remind them before the game that the Dallas Cowboys are extremely undisciplined and to especially watch #73 he's a holding machine and led college football last year in holding penalties and that's all it's gonna take for the refs to automatically start chucking their flags.

Well, here's a look at both:

Hold #1 - The blitzing LB beats Smith to the spot so Smith twists him and pancakes him to the ground as the LB pursues the runner. Holding?

Hold #2 - Smith and the DL stand each other up and as the DL tries to disengage to pursue the runner, Smith keeps hold of the DL's outside shoulder preventing the change of direction. Holding?

I can see the possibility of holding on the first one, but on the second, it looked like Smith had his right hand inside the pad, and the defender did a swim move to turn away for pursuit.

I’m not about to blame the zebras for our problems. Some of you just look for excuses.

So you think the beef with Goodall and Jerry is nothing to worry about?

Chances are, as long as Jerry is alive, the Cowboys won't win any more championships because the refs will do Roger's dirty work.

Not worried in the least! Just another excuse to blame our failures on the league. The problem is with the Joneses and how they run the team.

It might be carryover from left guard Williams penalties from last year as much as anything...
Let's not give Refs too much credit

Refs are the one thing that worries me. They seem to be just bad. Are we watching preseason? Do they use preseason to evaluate the refs too? Because they make a lot of wrong calls. Besides wrong calls, today I saw something that I thought I'd never see a ref do.

The kickoff goes through the endzone and is brought out to the 25.

Three plays later and the ball is short of the 35 by about 6 inches. You can clearly see the ball is short of the 35 yard line. What do they do? They bring out the chains.

I'm glad he did. Dude is going to be a monster. Moving him inside will help with the penalties.
He has to quit it with the grabby hands on the shoulder pads.

That might be what they taught at Tulsa and that is wrong. At least know when to quit grabbing.

There is a known saying, holding can be called on every play.

All in all, the best ones master the art of how to perform for the officials and become more technical.

I appreciate his hostility. If he can get the finer things down, we got ourselves a nice one.

I do not think there is anything to worry about with him mentally. Pair that with violence, you have a nice nice player.
