Our Success Depends on the Next Couple of Drafts

I’m sorry but drafts don’t matter.
Free agency doesn’t matter.
Salary cap doesn’t matter.

The QB matters and unless you have that…

Nothing matters.
Yep.

Cowboys draft well, EXCEPT at QB.

You're better off drafting a complete bust at QB, than drafting and building around a guy who will never even get you to a NFC CG, much less win SB, but who is just good enough to linger around giving false hope, and just waste years building around said QB.

I'll start with my summary:

With slightly better offensive coaching/scheme/routes and a legit #2 WR, they would have defeated the 49ers.

Worst Case:
If they retained all players from 2022 into training camp, what do they absolutely have to upgrade?

On offense, the 2022 roster was good enough everywhere except #2 WR.

I don't think they would miss a beat in 2023 if they cut Zeke and didn't keep Schultz.

On defense they managed with Bland at outside CB and a rotation at DT.

They could keep Lewis and play him at Nickel CB unless Mukuamu or someone else beats him out.

I think Hankins is only 30. Having him to start the season would help at DT.

Sign a legit WR in Free Agency and contributions from rookies will be a bonus.

Sign a big time free agent DT and it's a slam dunk.
If the QB plays better they would have defeated the 49ers as well.

I think Bland is better suited for slot than outside CB. He had his issues outside. Cut Lewis and save $5 million cap approximately. Bland plays slot. Go out and get a vet CB and draft another.

Hankins is a pretty important bring back IMO. I'd sign another DT in FA. Tomlinson would be a dream. Ain't happening. Payne would be an even bigger dream. Not happening.

FA WRs aren't exactly deep. There's a couple of names out there but nothing that pops out, even as a mid-level guy.

I thought the team would be mediocre at best this year but the draft class really saved things, particularly Smith and Bland.

I'm not particularly high on next year either given the cap situation and the bat **** crazy stuff coming out of the Jones' mouths. That said, if they pull another 2022 draft where they get multiple contributors then I could be wrong again.

Realistically, the Cowboys are a good to great drafting team that does virtually every other aspect of team management poorly. Given that drafting is ridiculously important, that has generally left them as a good team recently. If they continue to draft well, I think they will be competitive year in and year out.

Side note: Very few teams hit on all their picks. Like, none of them. It would be nice if Dallas stopped with the 2nd and 3rd round reaches though.

If you ask me, no matter what else we do outside of the draft, we have to have a good draft in 2023. If we somehow bomb this year's draft, it could be most costly. One good thing I noticed is that we have three 5th round picks this year, which is nice to have considering the talent in this draft. I expect to see some interesting, and quality players taken right around there for us.

In any case, I don't even care about the Super Bowl, although I do hope KC wins because I have family up that way. But I'm really looking forward to this draft.
Drafts are super important.
I think one thing we are seeing, thats really important is the GM competence.

When our team is too cheap to participate in free agency of course the draft is crucial. Problem is when you can only add 3 contributors each off season the guys you drafted a few years ago are gone and need replacing too.

hope springs eternal how many drafts before did we have and you say two more, most of the teams that win super bowls like KC, don't have loyalty to there draft they go get good players in free agency. that's why we have sunk to the bottom like detroit and the rest of the bottom feeders, 28 years and counting sio when jerry says we are primed to win what he's really saying is that get excited and go buy my BS

If you're depending on the draft to win then the team has already lost. You don't win championships based on rookies, it's 2-3 year players and free agency.

There are some holes to fill, the QB isn't one. It would be strategic to get another solid draft in and go all in. Jmo
I’d love for us to go all in ANd draft a QB…open to any round.

Give Dak a legit chance and start developing the future.

I'm not against it, for the future, but we're not far away now. I have no clue why the staff never drafts them.

We draft fairly well. There are other matters at hand.

Every team's success depends on the next couple of drafts. There isn't a single team in the NFL that is complete and ready to compete in the playoffs in 2024 or 2025 without a good couple of drafts. So the OP isn't saying anything that is uniquely a Cowboys problem. He's right, the Cowboys do need the next couple of drafts to be solid. But we have no reason to think the next couple of drafts won't be. This is what Will McClay does. Because of Will, this is one of the things the Cowboys do well... draft. In Will we trust.

We're close in my opinion. Especially when you can get so much out of rookies in year one.

Teams have to keep improving every year. This year Dallas regressed. Philly passed Dallas in talent level. Giants got better just by hiring a new coach and Washington is a QB away from being on Dallas's level.. Running it back with the same team is a mistake..

No it doesn't. No matter how well they draft, those players will be coming into a culture that doesn't demand hard work and success to get paid. They will fall victim to it just like all the rest. Then you have Dak at QB which cannot be overcome!

Nothing changes if dumb Dak is still under center. Get back with me at this time next season.

That's right. The draft class had a big outcome on how we even got into the playoffs. And then once we got there, they helped us win games.

I don't know if it'll happen, but imagine if guys like Tolbert and Sam Williams come on next year and play at a high level.

I'd say Smith, Bland, Hendershot, and Ferguson. So we got 4 players out of this class.

We have to watch out. The Eagles are also drafting well. They haven't won the Super Bowl yet, but they can easily add around a few of their players too and make themselves competitive. I think we've all seen that by now. But they're not so far ahead that we can't catch up or match them with a good draft.

This year's draft really matters.
