Packers were outplayed and outcoached by the Cowboys last night. The better team won the game. Congrats to the Cowboys and good luck, although I think the Cowboys won't need it because they just punched their ticket to Arizona.
Some thoughts on the game:
Cowboys O-line vs Packers D-line. This reminded me of the games in the 1990's when the Cowboys O-line just dominated the Packers D-line. Packers never came close to generating a pass rush with 4 down lineman. The only time the Packers came close to Romo was the few times they blitzed. I have to give Mark Colombo credit. I thought Aaron Kampman would have his way but he was a non-factor.
TO vs Al Harris. TO owned Harris all night long. Harris would have done nothing if TO didn't tip that ball to him in the end zone. Harris isn't a shut down corner. He has been beat by receivers not even close to TO's calibre this year.
Cowboys pass rush vs Packers O-line. Cowboys won this matchup too, although Packers did get better once they got back to their regular offense. Favre was pressured constantly for the 1 1/2 quarters he played. Rodgers was also under pressure. Clifton can't even come close to matching up with Ware.
Running game. Marion Barber is the toughest RB I've seen all year and the 2nd best one the Packers have faced. Adrian Peterson is the only RB who ran better against the Packers than Barber. Yes, I'm saying Barber is better than LT. This guy doesn't want to go down. Packers didn't get a running game going other than Grant's 62 yard TD run. When your down 27-10 in the 2nd quarter it's not the time to run the ball. Cowboys D did a good job on Grant.
Coaching. Wade Phillips and his staff completely outcoached Mike McCarthy and his staff. Jason Garrett had TO in motion all night long. When the Cowboys couldn't go underneath, they had someone open downfield. Packers got away from their defensive game plan and played zone. This doesn't happen if Woodson plays so why do it now? I don't understand why Bob Sanders played zone when it wasn't working.
Offensively the Packers came out trying to throw downfield. They got away from their regular offense. It wasn't until Favre got hurt and Rodgers came in that the Packers went back to their base offense and started moving the ball. Quick slants and throwing underneath the Driver and Jennings opened things up for Jones and Robinson. This is the second game McCarthy got away from their regular game plan. The other game was against the Bears and guess what happened in that game?
Aaron Rodgers. I was pleasantly surprised at the way he came into the game down 27-10 and led the Packers. He put the Packers in position to take the lead. Packers got back to the short passing game and he worked it better than I ever expected. I saw him run for his life last year when he came in against New England. This is a different Aaron Rodgers. The biggest bright spot for the Packers is that we found out we have 2 quarterbacks. Rodgers coming in for Favre was the best thing that could have happened and I never thought I would write that. Packers went back to their base offense with Rodgers, which they wouldn't have done with Favre. I was impressed with his mobility as well.
Officiating. This was a very well officiated game. The only call I question was the quick whistle on TO's first catch when Harris stripped him of the ball. Other than that I thought the officials got the calls right. Tramon Williams was guilty of pass intereference. When the refs didn't throw the flag right away I thought the Packers got away with one. I don't know what Collinsworth was whining about, it was a good call.
Announcers. The NFL Network can't find anyone else other than Bryant Gumble and Cris Collinsworth? Gumble is awful. I think the NFL Network figures since most of the country can't see the games anyway, why put on someone good?
Bottom line is the Cowboys are the best team in the NFC and they proved it last night. Congrats to the Cowboys.
