LB Coach Scott McCurley: Draft Show Interview

Overshown will spend time with 4 units, eventually. I don't think they will try to overload him and psyche him out like Tolbert, so he'll probably start with the LBs. Then he'll chat with Parsons and have some rolls on the d-line. He's definitely got some heart. . There's a lot of pressure at the NFL level, but I think the cloth Overshown is cut from is meant for the NFL. I think fans are already underrating him, and they will be flabbergasted when he hits the field. That's what my armchair scout's eye intuition tells me.

Overshown's fit? It's perfect.

I was bummed when I first heard the pick. We took a mid round gamble on a Texas athletic project. That frickin never works. But then I turned on the tape, and I immediately got it. It's like someone dropped a Dan Quinn linebacker into college.

Most colleges run pretty basic defensive schemes. They don't have a lot a lot of high end players, nor much time for coaching them. So most DCs pretty much call their plays off of the Madden Easy Mode list. Will 'backers play five yards off the line every snap, play scrape in run defense, and handle spot drops in zone. Even LB1 super-stud Jack Campbell ran that kind of mega-vanilla scheme.

But Overshown? He's lurking throughout the front, he's blitzing off the edge, he's carrying backs in man. His versatility was exceptional. Few college LBs get handed that level of responsibility, especially outside of the usual NFL factories.

And in a dime-backer, box safety type role too? It's awesome. Texas used him EXACTLY like Quinn's going to use him.

And Overshown's measurables checked out. And his draft stock was right in line with our pick. It was a frickin perfect pick IMO.

I'm not saying he'll be a stud... 75% of third rounders fail. But drafting is process over results, and the process here was flawless.
Your analysis is exactly right. You were just late to the party.

Think he's a passing down LB year one, which DQ probably loves being able to drop him into coverage or blitz.

Broaddus and Belt both have said basically the same thing , that the area scout really like Overshown and the regional scout loved him as well. They went as far as saying that there was genuine excitement when they got him. He has a lot of people in the organization that think he is going to be a player. Love of the Star podcast stated that they took him in the third as they felt he wouldnt have been there in the 4th . More than 1 team was looking at him in the 3rd-4th.

now I dont always like reading about hype but this defensive staff is so good that when they get the player they want they can do stuff with that player that makes all the draft pundits scratch their heads. See Nashon wright. Now he may not make the team this year but the hype for him has not been as strong as it has been for Overshown.
