Packers Article From 2017 Highlighting McCarthy's Time Management Issues

His TO usage, although something of a problem doesnt worry me nearly as much as things like going for it on 4th down on your own 30 on the opening drive.....when the other team needs all the help it can get.

That wasnt at all a one time thing, and he seems to be taking bigger chances each week.

Same guy who ran some double reverse fake punt inside his own 20 down by 6 last year.

I'll say it again....there's agressive, then there's stupid. He has been much closer to the latter and eventually its going to cost us a game. Matter of when.

It's 100% going to costs us a game. I just hope it's not in a win or go home situation.
 
The article is not about issues with clock management at all. It's a critique of McCarthy using timeouts shortly before the half in an attempt to get the ball back with time remaining for the offense. It is basically just saying, more often than not, it didn't work out. McCarthy definitely has issues with calling timeouts (or not) at strange times, but I think the issue is being greatly overstated.

Using timeouts horribly over and over dating back to literally the beginning of your head coaching career is, in fact, a clock management issue.

It seems that McCarthy has had issues with clock management and timeouts his entire career. It's not a new thing.

Are timeouts and clock management McCarthy's version of the yips?

interesting...based on the article (given I didn't research anything myself), it sounds like inside one minute is where he unncessarily gets aggressive. he has been aggressive with more than a minute (or two) left on the clock, wanting the ball back and seemingly has worked to the team's advantage, but inside a minute he calls unncessary timeouts...

he did it again against New England, calling a TO with 20 seconds remaining, given a 70 yard TD play in an 8 second span was fresh on everyone's mind. not sure why he didn't let it run to a few seconds.

It seems like it's just a problem he has in general and always has been an issue for him.

That's why I said it seem like time outs and clock management gives McCarthys the yips.

When is it gonna cost us though? I keep hearing this every week but it hasn’t yet.

In hindsight that was a bad decision but you just had your FG kicker miss a 51 yarder and you were within a yard for a 1st down. Probably in the 2-3 second space there may have not even known if it was a 1st down or not. We knew from the TV angle. Needed a timeout right there to make the correct decision.
 
Every coach makes questionable decisions. Does he make more mistakes than the average HC? I don't watch enough other teams to know. Going for it on 4th and 1 so early so close to your own goal line was not the best move. Not going for it late in the game was more a result of the other failed 1 yard line attempts but this would have been the appropriate time to go for it. I think we have been lucky that his misuse of time outs has not hindered us more.

That is what some goofball on one of the show said. Can't remember his name, but be praises the Cowboys, but always has a BUT...and puts them down.
As he used to put them down all he time, but now knows with them at 5-1 and Dak playing great he would look like a fool.

Anyway, he said they will win the NFCE and win a home playoff game. But will lose in the divisional round because of MM.

Well then blame Jerry.....I don't get the constant posts about this.....it's been covered, he has us at 5-1.....I heard Bill shouldn't have punted in overtime, I wonder if his fans are still crying about it??
 
It's definitely not his strength. And nothing new. Kind of like Andy Reid has always had the same reputation.
