Sources: Packers say Vikings tampered with Favre

by Jay Glazer
Jay Glazer is a Senior NFL Writer for FOXSports.com on MSN and also appears every week on FOX NFL Sunday as the network's NFL Insider.

As the days roll by, the Brett Favre saga seems to get stranger and stranger. Now the soap opera has shifted to a new level.

In the latest twist, the Packers have filed tampering charges with the league office against the Minnesota Vikings for alleged communication with Favre, still technically a member of Green Bay, FOXSports.com has learned. The league, according to a source, is currently in information-gathering mode, speaking to members of both teams.

The Vikings were informed late last week that the allegation is that Favre has had inappropriate dialogue with Minnesota offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, a close Favre friend and former assistant coach with the Packers. Favre has sought his release from Green Bay and several rumors have swirled that Minnesota is his targeted landing place, largely due to his relationship with Bevell.

League sources say the Vikings vehemently denied any wrongdoing and are awaiting the league's next step in the process. The Packers, meanwhile, have supplied the league with their version of wrongdoing.

Should the league find the Vikings guilty of tampering, they could lose draft picks and/or face fines.

The entire affair escalated to an ugly level this week when Favre conducted an interview with FOX News' Greta Van Susteren in which the living legend took the Packers to task for refusing to release him. In fact, a leaked version of the transcript had Favre blasting GM Ted Thompson, but in another odd twist, that portion of the interview has not been shown on the air.

The Packers have refused to grant the league's all-time leading passer's request for a release due in part to their fear that he would sign with the Vikings. Despite the wave of speculation, Vikings head coach Brad Childress insists that Tarvaris Jackson is his guy.

The entire affair is unfortunate, as Favre is more synonymous with Green Bay than any other player is with a city. At the same time, however, fans are now forced to make judgments for or against their hometown hero/team.

Calls by FOXSports.com to head coaches of both teams have not yet been returned.

I do not want to see him in Minny!

If true, it is gonna cost them... I am not surprised since the current QB in Minn is terrible. But GB will do what they can to keep Favre from playing in their division, and maybe the NFC.

Anything else that could happen that hasn't happened yet with this Favre story?

I'm usually a gentle man. Kind to animals, unless I am going to eat them....

But I really wished someone would just punch favre in the mouth.

Don't know if I've ever tired of a story faster than this whole Favre melodrama?

My goodness, he said that publicly?

Sounds as if Favre had a conversation with his friend and now coach on the Vikings. And now someone is making it an issue. He said she said.

Give me a break.

Too early to jump on either side here, girls.

Good, it does not bode well for the rest of the NFC is the Vikings actually get a QB. Thankfully there is almost no chance that they will get Favre.

I asked this question when it was first reported that Favre was coming back but GB didnt want him or want to release him.

I thought Minn was an obvious choice. So what is stopping Minn from going to Miami and offering an extra pick over whatever they have to give GB for Favre?

Green Bay would surely put a poison pill in any trade to make sure that does not happen. Such as they would trade him to Baltimore for a 2nd round pick but if he is traded to a team on a lit, the first team would be responsible for 3 1st round draft choices. Apparently the Packers have an employee that Favre confided some of this tampering information to. I suspect that employee was James Campen who visited Favre during the past couple of months while this has been simmering. Favre and Campen are good friends and FAvre threw Campen under the bus during the Fox interview (script version not on camera) and James may want to get a little payback.

This is getting ugly. I may become a Buc fan. Or not!

The tlot phickens.

No love here for the Packers.
Hope that little pee-fee franchise implodes.
There are other worthy venues for the NFL like Austin-San Antonio or Mobile or Salt Lake City, but I'm dreaming, right NFL?

more like halucinating. Why would Austin-San Antone, mobile or Salt Lake be more deserving? The team has a 100,000 waiting lists for tickets and never misses a sellout and is one of three teams with a National following. How exactly is that a bad thing for the NFL???

The parasitical Packers can fold for all I care.

Favre is proving again it is all about him.

That being written, the Packers must be getting desperate given you only pull the tampering claim out of your butt when you are losing big time.

I don't see how teams cannot contact retired players, that doesn't make sense. If he was reinstated then I would understand but he is no longer a part of the league.

parasitical??? Funny. the Packers are one of the top revenue teams in the leage and one of the ones required to GIVE their funds to the more deserving bigger cities that don't know how to shop their product. .
