CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)

The Carolina Panthers have decided the price is too steep to keep their all-time sacks leader.

It means five-time Pro Bowl defensive end Julius Peppers is about to become one of the top prizes in free agency.
Agent Carl Carey says the Panthers have told him they won't place the restrictive franchise tag on Peppers for a second consecutive year at a cost of more than $20 million.
The move Tuesday comes two days before the tag deadline. Peppers will become an unrestricted free agent on March 5.
The 30-year-old has recorded 81 sacks in eight years with Carolina. But while he was voted a member of the NFL's all-decade team, he's also been criticized for inconsistency.

No offense to the original poster in any way, but is this really "news" at this point?

Did anyone think they would overpay yet again for this bum?

I can't wait to see what team makes that mistake this year.

I'm rooting for Snyder and the 'Skins!

:D

Me too. He'll fit perfectly next to Haynesworth.

He will be an Eagle or Patriot.

I can't see the Patriots falling into the trap of overpaying him.

Even the Eagles would be a remote possibility in my mind, despite their obvious need.

Peppers did not have that bad of a season he did have 10.5 sacks 2 ints 1 returned for a TD and 5 forced fumbles. I really don't care to see him in Philly or NY.

And was him half assing it.

He is almost like Randy in that he plays when he wants to. I am from charlotte and have watched him almost every week his whole career. He can be a monster and everyone should watch out if he comes out this year with something to prove. Do not wanna see him on the eagles at all.

I agree I think the guy has not lived up to his potential. He is a freak as far as his athletic ability. He has great reflexes and quickness but does not seem as if he wants it bad enough. Going to another team having to prove yourself to new teammates and coaches could be just what the doctor ordered for him. I just hope he is not in the NFC East

Or he could "Haynesworth" it and really coast once he gets that huge signing bonus and knows he won't be cut?

It's not like we haven't see that before, especially from guys with "inconsistant motors".

That is true that could happen, however I think Peppers even if he is not living up to his potential is still putting up good numbers. I just think the guy is capable of much more. In 8 years the guy avg double digit in sacks has 30 forced fumbles and 6 ints and is a DE. I think if he can get on a team where teammates and coaches can push him he could be a big player for someone. I just as soon it be outside of the East than in the East. Haynesworth relies so much on his size but Peppers has some real skills that are hard to find.

The guy dogs it cause he's not happy in Carolina and still puts up monster numbers. God forbid if he's happy.

Stay away from the NFC period.

How many sacks did he have in our game against the Panthers this season?

I don't remember him lighting it up when we played the Panthers (though I very well could be wrong...)

I don't base a player just on how he did vs Cowboys. Steve Smith is a great WR but has not done much vs us. I just think Peppers is a guy who has the talent and in the right situation could live up to that talent.

I do.

If he signs with a division rival and doesn't do much against us, I don't consider him a big threat.

Just like Haynesworth.

It doesn't look like he helped the Commanders a heck of a lot.

Peppers has talent but he is, was, and I feel always will be an underachiever who doesn't love the game enough to realize his vast potential.

And - in my opinion - giving him the big bucks he's looking for is a mistake for whatever team makes it.

It is not about one on one match ups if he can get with a team who can bring the heat from different directions and a staff that can push him he very well could turn things around. In Carolina he was it and it is much easier to handle just 1 good pass rusher than it is a team that already has some talented pass rushers in place.

Peppers thinks leaving Carolina will allow him to thrive

Panthers G.M. Marty Hurney confirmed to the Charlotte media what has been expected for weeks now: Julius Peppers won't get the franchise tag.

Hurney said it was a "very difficult" decision, but spoke about the need to build a complete 53-man roster and stay competitive into the future. The statements made by Peppers and his agent Carl Carey were more interesting to us.

"I feel good about having the opportunity to visit with other teams," Peppers said. "My goal will be to find the right match for my skill set."

That subtle dig was amplified by Carey.

"[Peppers] has had a very accomplished career thus far; but he is convinced that with this move he will thrive and develop fully into the player he was destined to become."

Wow. After eight seasons, Peppers is essentially admitting that he's not the player he could be. And he's seemingly blaming the Panthers for it. (He didn't thank them in his statement.)

If you were already in the buyer beware camp for Peppers, this isn't helping his case.
