Parcells vs. McCarthy?

Compare and contrast the significance and meaning of the McCarthy hire in light of the last time Jerry had to make a hire to regain credibility. Coming off of 3 straight 5-11 seasons with a puppet coach, a roster nobody respected and needing to build a new stadium, Jerry hired someone who could never be described as a yes man.

It lasted 4 years with Parcells restoring the franchise to respectability against some tough odds, having to dump the "Franchise QB" in year 2 and take a chance on an UDFA QB just two years. Still, he couldn't quite get the team over the hump, he got tired and the culture reverted to something Switzeresque quickly after he left.

Where are we now with McCarthy, post-Garrett? What are the similarities and differences? What are the chances to improve on the Parcells effect and actually get back to championship level competition?

Can only take it one season at a time. If the Cowboys go 4-12 next year, McCarthy may be done.

Parcells took over 4 teams as HC that were in complete disarray, didn't have QBs, and turned them around almost overnight in some cases. Dallas was particularly noteworthy because he did it without Belichick.

McCarthy in GB, like Garrett, took over a contender that was already assembled with a perennial pro bowl QB, and was asked to just do better than the last guy. Every time that QB got injured, however, the team was abysmal in both cases, leading to questions about how much the HC is actually coaching and how much he's riding his QBs coattails... until finally a season where the QB wasn't injured and they sucked anyway, getting both fired.

And now McCarthy enters another situation with a contender that was already assembled with a perennial pro bowl QB, and he's only asked to do better than the last guy. Fingers crossed this is a completely different scenario!

So a major difference would be the talent on the roster they are inheriting?

I’d rather have a 50 year old Parcells
MM may do well here but he doesn’t have the one thing bill had
The ability to win with less talent
Bill was amazing at that
Jerry will get him the talent to compete but he’s gonna have to get more out of what we have and if he can, he will be great
Some guys ain’t going anywhere like smith and Dlaw
Getting those guys playing at an elite level will be his hardest and most important job

Listen, Parcells was a Don. That dude was the greatest coach I've ever seen in my life and I don't care who agrees with me. Running up titles with Tom Brady is one thing. Turning around reclamation projects immediately with your mere presence is something else altogether. It was like he could go anywhere in any situation with any QB and that team would contend.

He rebuilt this God awful mess in 2003 while attached to two morons and he did it in his 60's when he was running on fumes. Took over a laughing stock and left it a legitimate playoff contender in 4 years.

McCarthy is only on his 2nd stop, completely different than Parcells who was on his 4th stop and had already WON 2 Bowls and took a 2nd team to a Bowl. Apples to oranges...

Agree with everything you said about Parcells.
Who gets to the postseason with Quincy Freakin' Carter at QB and a slop roster?
As for McCarthy, he is nowhere close to Parcells' league as a coach, but still a proven winner nonetheless.
Certainly the type of coach with skins on the wall to demand the same respect Parcells demanded, as opposed to a yes-man.
He is inheriting a much better roster than Parcells did in '03, and expectations will rightly be high.

I think the better comparison would be with Mike Shanahan...

Starting with Favre in 1992 the Packers enjoyed 13 years without a losing record under Mike Holmgren, Ray Rhodes (1 years), and Mike Sherman. In 2005 Sherman's record dipped to 4-12 and the Pack turned to McCarthy who they were familiar with from his days as Favres QB coach in 1999. McCarthy took them to 8-8 his first year, 13-3 the second. Favre was replaced by Rodgers in 2008 and again there was a dip in the record to 6-10.

Following that they began a nine year run of play-offs.

In 2017, game 6 Aaron Rodgers suffered a broken collarbone leaving the Packers to Brett Hundley. He finished the season, posting a 7-9 record, which was McCarthy's second losing season in Green Bay.

In 2018, with Rodgers back at QB the Packers floundered around .500 until week 11 when they lost the first of three straight falling from 4-4-1 to 4-7-1.
McCarthy was replaced with Joe Philbin.

Meanwhile the Cowboys had posted three consecutive 5-11 seasons 2000-2002. In 2003 Bill Parcells came on board and immediately posted a 10-6 followed by a 6-10. In his first three years he had three different QBs, (Carter, Testaverde, Bledsoe) before installing Romo.

please dont disrespect Parcells by mentioning these two in the same sentence

Not sure I wouldn’t take a guaranteed Super Bowl and 4 NFC championship games. I hope it’s the same scenario.

I agree with you

This! love that beginning of the 2nd paragraph. LLLOOOLLL

Plus his boobs were fully blossomed here

They were 4-12 the season before McCarthy was hired. Not exactly a contender.

I enjoy posters bringing the oppositions view point, but do you even research what you say?

Such a bad take here

4-12* with Brett Favre and made the NFCCG his second season with the team that was already there. The last coach got fired because they blamed the 4-12 on him. Just like when Garrett took over a 6-10 (1-7) team that was already assembled. If they didn’t do poorly, McCarthy wouldn’t have been hired in the first place.
