Is this what the NFL envisioned when they enacted the salary cap? 2 teams undefeated at this point in time? 2 one win teams and 2 two win teams?

All the talk back then was that it would make team "more even"....

It seems to me that it has gotten worse.

It makes you cringe at what they may try to do to bring more "parity" to the NFL.

There is more parity in the NFL. The Cowboys, 49ers or Bills of the early 90s could all run through a modern NFL schedule undefeated pretty easily. Indy and NO are just the best that the watered down league has to offer.

The bad teams arent as bad as they used to be, but the good teams arent NEARLY as good as the good teams of the past. Back when, you couldnt have gaping holes in your team like the Colts and Saints have and be the best team in football.

The point is that this isn't something that they thought would happen....that or they just had to "get" the Jerry Jones' of the world because at the time he was changing the way business in the NFL was run.

Sometimes I think the only reason for a salary cap was to put more money in certain owners pockets.

Now some of those owners are crying because the minimum payroll requirement is more than they think it should be.

The point wasnt to have every team go 8-8, it was to give everyone an equal playing field. Big market teams with huge fanbases and revenue sales can no longer buy championships. There was a reason that teams like Arizona, New Orleans, etc. were down for so long, they simply didnt have a chance.

The NFL never intended the win/loss gap to be reduced

People think that the salary cap has solelly created parity in the NFL, but it has not. An equal contributor has been the cut-down of the gameday and team rosters. Now-a-days, the rosters are smaller for every team which forces more player movement. that along with a cap-structure are what cause all teams to churn about 30% of their roster every year. In turn, that impacts teams' depth charts to be less experienced in playing togehter, which adds vulnerability. Given that every team is sure to have injuries to starters, forcing the depth to paly more, opponents can now more easily exploit those vulnerabilites. And the end redsult is parity.

It gives more clubs a shot to make the playoffs each year. It's all about management instead of money, which is I guess fair.

Either way, the salary cap will exist no more (THANK GOD) and we'll see the same teams dominate every year again. That's what makes the NFL exciting to me. :star:

Some owners don't mind putting money back into their team,I consider them to be good owners.

The cheap skates out there are there for the handouts. They put the minimum amount of money required back into the club and pocket the rest.I'll be glad when they knockout the revenue sharing. Those guys don't care about competing,it's about the bottom line.

It amazed me Shanahan wants to be part of that mess in D.C.

Joe Gibbs couldn't do it and he is that teams HoF coach.

I am just shaking my head over these Shanahan to D.C. reports. I can't understand why anyone would/could want to work for Snyder.

He is a child.

I guess only $$ talks w/ some.

I thought both sides eventually want to come to an agrement that still involves a cap-structure - although an imporved one at that, which is what they need to negotiate.

Where is Adam to elaborate when we need him? :)

Last season there were only 11 teams with a losing record. That's parity.

I'd like to get some statisticians to break down what the odds are of seeing two undefeated teams and two one win and two win teams this late in the season are. I actually believe they odds would be astronomically high.

What would happen if every team in the league finished 8-8?Won every home game and lost all their away games.

Now that would be interesting.

Half of the AFC is still alive for the playoffs in week 13 and many NFC teams are still alive also. That is what they want with parity. Strange though that they won't expand the playoff format.

We had a 9-7 team playing a 9-6-1 team in the NFC championship game last year. That's parity.

The Saints went from worst to first in their division. That sounds like parity to me.

And if you look at some statistical numbers like a simple standard deviation of the number of wins, thats around the same as it was in the 90s (at least compared with some randomly picked seasons)

Agree. Nothing wrong with a salary cap. It's the structure that's the problem. Either the cap is too low or players have bloated contracts. Teams rarely have depth as they did pre-cap. Either teams are forced to waive contributing players for cap reasons or injuries come about. How many guys were we rotating with our DL during the SB run? 5-8? You'd be hard pressed if a team has 3 these days.

It's not a coincidence that the best football is played in September when teams are relatively healthy.

BTW: This isn't parity. This is mediocrity at it's finest. :)

I was thinking about that as well. NFL has never had 2 undefeated teams this late in the season. I take nothing from the Colts and the Saints but under this system of FA and Caps the end results have not really changed

Good post.I just read an interesting article in the newest ESPN magazine about this. They claim parity is dead and gonna get way worse next year with no salary cap.I didnt realize just how many teams in the NFL are in financial trouble.Examples like the Browns,Jags,Detroit,Raiders are barely able to keep the 80% filled seats. There was over 15 blacked out games this year compared to 6 last year. The NFL is hurting in a lot of ways that go untold. They stated one major problem as the rookie contracts amonst many other larger things.

I would put some of that on the economy, some of the cities you are showing has very high unemployment rates. I do think if those teams were doing better the attendence would be higher but I still think they would have a rough time selling out games.
