Parity sure is making the NFL fun to watch (IMHO)

When San Diego struggles against Oakland, it's parity. When the favored Texans lose to the rookie-led Jets, it's parity. When the defending NFC champion Cardinals lose to SF, it's parity. When the defending champion Steelers struggle at home against Tennessee, it's parity. But when the Cowboys play a less than perfect opener on the road against Tampa, they're a bunch of bums. Amazing how that works. I'm not calling out anyone in this particular thread, but the usual suspects know who they are.

I agree. I know some will say the Cowboys are held to a different standard truth is the Cowboys are an NFL team like the rest of them and it is hard to win games in this league none should be taken for granted based off what other Cowboy teams of the past have done.

The fact that the 60's is only halfway up the chart below the 70's, 80's, 90's and 00's shows that this chart is completely bogus.

For you anything. I am still going to think my thoughts though. Hope you caught that I did the same thing as part of the joke.

Good thread.

Yeah there were some good games this week.

If you want another reason to watch/cheer for games you wouldn't normally, try playing Fantasy Football. I'm playing in a 50$ league and every game for you is emotional. It's awesome.

God I'm glad football season is here.

Man, I had to quit playing FF cause it screwed up my loyalties and how I watched the game. Ex: I'd want guys to run 80 yards, stop 2 yards short of the goal line and then have someone else fumble so my guy would get the yards and not the turnover.

My team was stacked and I steam rolled all year and then when the playoffs started, many of my best players rested because their teams had locked up play off spots. I'm still pissed about that, I think I lost one game all year in the regular season and then got knocked out in the first round of the playoffs for squadooche!

Hahah, yeah that's stupid. That's really my only gripe with FF, teams rest a lot of starters that last game when they have a spot locked up. I'm liking my team, I have Roy/Witten/Folk so here's to them having a good game! ;)

I have to admit the parity in this league sure has made for a lot of fun games to watch (I'm not qualified to accurately evaluate whether the quality of play is good or not).

Anyone catch these games:

Tenn vs Pitt
SD vs Oakland
Chicago vs Green Bay
SF vs Az
Denver vs Cinci (ending anyway)
Buff vs NE

I thought they were a blast to watch and I didn't even have a rooting interest. I'm almost tempted to get the NFL season pass. Throw in the USC vs Ohio St game and this was a heck of a weekend for football

To me it's fun to follow but often not fun to watch. That's a big difference.

I just don't see how people can make statements like these. The final 10 Super Bowls of the Salary Cap era were decided by an average of 22.4 points, with only 2 of them being within a touchdown.

The 10 most recent Super Bowls have been decided by an average of 9.7 points with 6 of them being within a touchdown.

Now let's put aside personal biases and ignore the fact that the Cowboys won 2 of those Super Bowl contained in my first sample... what's more enjoyable? Watching competitive football that comes down to the final play, or watching one team beat up on another 55-10 in the biggest game of the year?

I have to agree with that also after watching dynastic football from the early/mid 70's through the mid 90's.

The NFL was infinately better in the days before the cap. Players staying with one team for the majority of their career, true "dynasties", etc.

The modern NFL is really watered down IMO

I think people get nostalgic over the old days but remember things that just didn't exist. Back in the "old days" you had some teams that were perennially dominant, some that were consistent losers, and some that came out of nowhere to have a good season or even make a Super Bowl run.

These days, we have some teams that are perennially dominant, some that are consistent losers, and some that can come out of nowhere to make a Super Bowl run.

If someone knew nothing about football and I gave them that final standings from every season of the decade of the 70's and the same for each season from this decade, there would not be any noticeable statistical variance. Things really aren't all that significantly different today than they were at any time period of the modern (Super Bowl) era.

How about you accept that its just my opinion without trying to think for me? I remember things just fine thank you. I have a DVD collection of games ranging from 1971 to now so I certainly do remember things that existed. Give me a freakin break with that nonsense.

I liked the NFL better prior to FA and Caps as well. The teams were like family these guys started and ended careers together. Team were playing together long enough that you had groups like the Doomsday Defense, Steel Curtain, Purple people eater, fearsome foursome and so on because these groups played together year after year now days each year guys are coming and going and more players are no more than hired guns

I guess we have to ignore the fact that I haven't responded to a single post of yours in this thread (until now) so I have no idea where this comment is coming from... nevertheless...

...this is an open forum, where everyone is free to chime in with their own opinions. If you can't handle people respectfully disagreeing with your opinions, I suggest you go elsewhere.

My final comment on this topic: during the pre free agency era, no team ever went 16-0 or 0-16, both of which have happened during the free agency, watered down era. I don't see any parity, just a lot more teams that suck overall.

Actually, there was a team that went 17-0. There was also a team that went 0-14, but they were an expansion team so we'll cut them some slack.

Those games were only exciting because they were loaded with sloppy play. None of those teams looked good...Pitt looked the best and I was utterly unimpressed with their performance.
