They should be careful with Free. Having Tony Hills as the backup for Parnell in the playoffs is worrisome. It would be better to have Free active but not starting if that increased the chances of having both him and Parnell healthy for the playoff games.

Probably the wrong forum and wrong time, but they need to draft another young tackle and I'd do it in the first round if the right one was to be found. I just think they need to finish this OL and then get to the defensive line from there.

To track back to the subject. I do think Parnell has gotten better, but I also think he, like everyone on this team, needs competition.

I've been on board with having Parnell become the eventual starter for a few years now. I don't think we should spend another 1st rounder on a RT because of Parnell's ability and potential. But I'm much more comfortable with Free for the remainder of this season. He's played very well and we're the best O-line in the NFL with Free at RT. I'm not about to experiment with things this late in the season. Let's just stick with what works. But next season... I'm all for cutting Free, drafting a mid-round RT, and giving Parnell an entire season to develop as the starter. I just think it's too risky to break up the continuity and consistency the strongest unit on our team has had going into the playoffs.

Dallas has a decision to make when the off-season arrives, keep Parnell or Doug Free?

A potential subplot to the above decision is OL coach Bill Callahan.

Callahan reportedly wanted out of his contract when the team started discussing hiring Scott Linehan to come in and take over the play calling duties.

Jerry Jones said there were several teams that expressed interest in Callahan but Dallas would not let him out of the final year of his contract.

"We had many opportunities, from other clubs, other clubs wanted him, several, that's the last thing we need to be doing, is losing a good coach, losing not only an offensive line coach but really losing a good offensive coach."

If Callahan was in demand last off-season while under contract, the clamoring should only increase given the team's success this season along with the expiration of his deal.

If Callahan leaves, will he petition for Jermey Parnell or Doug Free if his new team has a need at RT?

I'm open to drafting a RT as early as round one, but I'm not expecting it.

If the team re-works the existing two years of Doug Free's deal or agrees to an extension with Jermey Parnell, there won't be a need to scratch this particular itch early in the draft.

Dallas will also have Darrion Weems back next year, a player that is supposedly well thought of by the staff and front office, as the leading candidate to become the new swing tackle.

Donald Hawkins is also an option, but he might get moved inside to guard next year. I feel that's his best fit and it might explain why veteran OT Tony Hills has remained on the roster since Doug Free returned from his first injury.

To track back to the subject. I do think Parnell has gotten better, but I also think he, like everyone on this team, needs competition.

Agreed.

Jason Garrett talks about competition a lot and creating it whenever he can on the roster.

It's a very good thing.

I didn't see any real mistakes in the game by Parnell after watching just him. He did a fine job, but he really wasn't tested at all. I am surprised they didn't game plan for him even just a little bit. But he can only block what they put in front of him and he did just that. Didn't have anyone sniff Romo, and did really well in run blocking.

Free will get his spot back but I like the idea of having some competition/depth...

Parnell is at least a quality starting OT. In fact even if we bring Free back, it may be worth it to see if we can retain Parnell as well. He could start on 20 teams at RT and is functional at LT if needed. IMO that versatility is something you should be willing to pay for

Realistically speaking, Parnell has never truly been afforded the opportunity to prove himself via getting the experience to do so. Playing under the present circumstances should provide exactly the opportunity he's so obviously been lacking in the past. His performance(s) in these upcoming contests should go a long way toward providing the needed evidence to either prove or disprove his worthiness. Apparently, his big chance is at hand.

Any way after watching the all-22 I have to say that I am impressed with Parnell's progression over the year. Going back to the preseason, I remember being very concerned about his technique with his punch. Even in the Eagles game he was using one-arming over hand constantly like a boxer. You are never going to get true power that way like that and it's a good way to get illegal hands to the face or head slapping. His other issue was hesitancy and timing. His punch would come late or not at all. He was susceptible to all kinds of moves when he let people get into his pads like that.

Then you have the way he was playing against the Colts delivering two handed body blows all game long. What impressed me most was his work on stunts and blitzes. I have complained of Martin and Free over a stunt they gave up free rushers regularly in the first half of the season. DE playing 5 slants into Martin and OLB/nickel/S stunts into that A gap. If Fred is occupied and those guys gets crossed it's over. JP hits a lot harder than Free does and when Redding or whoever tried to cross his face he leveled them. Stunt was over.

His jarring two handers kept coming and by the end of the game Colts front 7 were rushing around him avoiding getting into range of his fists. That's dominance.

He is not well coordinated moving in space and struggles to reach some blocks. He makes mental errors and can be sluggish but when he is on he is a sight to see.

Thanks for that detail on his progression and technique. One of the great features of this board is members like you who take the time to educate and inform the rest of us fans.

Well done....

I've always like him better than Free.

I would hate to play against Parnell.. Free wouldn't be that big of a deal.

Free has been crushing defenders in the running game this year, so I think it would be a pretty big deal to go up against him.

I was very pleased with last Sunday's performance by Parnell. I think it was the best we've seen from him.

We still don't run as well to the right when he is in the game instead of Free, but some of that is likely because Martin is gimpy right now.

I hope Parnell keeps up what he showed and makes it a tough decision if we have to keep just one of the two tackles. I think Dallas would still pick Free at this point, if it had to choose one, because of his leadership and superior understanding of the nuances of playing the position ... but I would prefer that the Cowboys keep the younger Parnell if he plays like he did against Indianapolis because of age and the fact that there is still some upside there.

Don't reserve a spot on that bandwagon for me. I like Free's leadership. The OLine ain't broke, don't fix it. If Parnell was a better option he would have started long ago.

I think Free kept him from being a better option, but by the end of this season, he might have proved that he's at least as good of an option. That's what will make the decision tough.

Do you stick with the veteran leader who is pretty good but will never be great and who is getting to the age in this league where injuries start slowing players down?

Or do you stick with the younger player who is looking pretty good but might never be great and who does not have much wear and tear on him?

He's only going to get better with more play time. Playing in consecutive weeks should help him a lot with having all the reps in a short window.

Competition is a powerful thing. It's one of the reason you shouldn't be afraid to bring in players at positions that may already have talent.

Thats the thing. there is no competition. Free is the starter and Parnell is the backup

Lots of praise from Callahan about Parnell. That says everything coming from that guy.

It was never officially confirmed, but Bill Callahan was reportedly the one responsible for Doug Free and Jermey Parnell splitting snaps in December of 2012.

Callahan had been pushing to play Parnell due to Free's poor play that year.

Parnell will get a very good test Sunday against Kerrigan. I'm interested in how he does.
