Pass Rush

I know it's only preseason, and I know the defense is learning a new, more aggressive concept of the 3-4, but I'm more than just a little worried about this teams' lack of sack production.

You can talk until you're blue in the face about a pressure being as good as a sack, but I don't buy it. If you only pressure the QB, good things can still happen for the opponent. Drive their QBs' face into the turf while he still has the ball, and there is nothing but bad news for the other guys. Also, when you hit the QB while he still has the ball, you can strip it for a turnover. The hat trick that DWare had against Carolina his rookie season made the difference between winning & losing that game. We need to free him up for a lot more of those kinds of games.

The bad guys aren't going to leave our SuperSacker (the aforementioned Mr. Ware), one on one with anyone, until some of our other players can prove they are a menace as well. I know Spencer has been putting some good pressure on at times, but now it's time to take it to the next level, Anthony. We need ya, bud.

I was a little surprised that the team waived LB Junior Glymph. He showed some propensity for getting a push into the backfield. With the lack of sacks this preseason, you would think Phillips would have kept any player who had success in that area the last 4 games.

So far, I think we're averaging around one sack a game. Wow!! Bet the Giants are shaking in their shoes. At the rate we're going, maybe even Eli Manning will feel safe in the backfield.

I know Phillips has only shown the tip of the iceberg, and all that stuff, but so far, the tip looks pretty dull. We couldn't sink the SS Minnow right now, let alone the Titanic. Here's hoping they put all of my fears to rest come next Sunday night. Otherwise, it's time to start praying for a miracle healing for Greg Ellis.

everybody likes the sacks, but if we see a consistent pass rush thats all that counts...good pass rush= incompletions and/or bad throws that turn into picks

teams can avoid sacks by keeping in extra blockers or running shorter routes as well

we'll have a good pass rush...I have little doubt about that

All the defensive players say that we haven't seen the real defense yet. All we have been seeing is a base defense with limited blitzing.

Personally, could care less about fake season.

But nonetheless, most of this talent is leftover from the Bill P era-who's assets were largely run stuffers(i.e. Chris Canty and Jason Ferguson), and not being true pass rushers.

I hate to say it, folks-but this ain't SD's nor Buffalo's D. We need PLAYERS.

You named two on the DL, but the ones you didn't mention were sack guys in college. (Spears, Hatcher, Ratliff) Ferguson being a NT should be a run stopper, but he has had some seasons where he got a few sacks. Canty is the only DL that played in the same system in college that Parcells ran and maybe thats why he wasn't a pass rusher there either.

The scheme alone won't generate all this additional pressure. Players must still win individual battles. They must still get off blocks and make plays.

Hopefully, we see this. It's been a long, long time.

honestly he has never been what most fans thought he was, I dont even think most fans realize he is the same size as ellis and naturally he is limited to being one dimensional. I dont think he could ever play backpedaling and having to cover anyone.

he is big and heavy and I am not sure that is what phillps is looking for, when you look at khari long and justin rogers they look like the prototype for what phillips wants, long arms, athletic and quick.
6"4 and around 250.

Glymph did have 27 sacks I believe in college, but I just dont think he is a worthy of a roster spot, and I think that is why they cut him, in a month will he be able to cover anyone? Will he have improved his pass rush technique enough to get on the field?

Try looking up Wade Phillips history taking over defenses.

If a guy consistantly takes a 3 step drop, or a quick drop, you're just not going to get a ton of sacks, that's just the way it is. The key truly is, if we can stop the run.

If we can stop the run, this forces them to become predictable. If you go back and watch the Texans game, their were several times the QB was basically getting hit while the ball was being handed off. So if you force them to be predictable, then Eli will be in SERIOUS TROUBLE COME SUNDAY NIGHT.

Agree David. That was the beauty of Charles Haley. If he wasn't putting the QB on his back, he was breathing DOWN his back so hard that that was enough to disrupt the play. We don't have that player on this team, despite the Ware comparisions.

Ware led the NFL in pressures last season.

I have my concerns. Pressure is as good as a sack, other than the potential loss of yards which is nice too! But concerning disrupting a play, I'll take pressure.

Problem remains, Ware is our only pressure guy really.Until Ellis retruns.

Wade's past with other plays will help this group only so much. You have to have the horses. Do we? Don't know. Guys like Spears and Canty have not yet showed they are capable. Hatch appears nice. Spencer may help some too. We do not have the players SD has. I think we'll have to stunt and blitz quite a bit.

If that is so, then why did we lose?

We didn't contain the run very well. Green had a few good runs against (or 'through' for lack of a better word) our defense.

Why do we care it's pre-season. Maybe if we had played Romo the entire game, or our defense the entire game, or Glenn was playing, or Ellis/Newman/Fasano was playing, or maybe if we'd run more exotic blitzes, or if we had a game-plan -- Choose any of these variables.

I'll never ask the question "why did we lose" in a pre-season game, but feel free. I'm sure the Colts are concerned that they lost to us in the pre-season game, and i'm sure their fan association thinks they are doomed because of it, and i'm also sure they will again compete for a Super Bowl this year - lord knows how they're going to make it sense they lost a pre-season game/s :)
