Pass Rush

Okay, even if you limit it to Ware, what have we seen this preseason that tells us that more than Ware will be involved. I guess I see somewhat more pressure across the board, but certainly not dramatically more.
' I ' have seen more pressure generated across the front seven this preseason via stunts and designed blitzes--especially during the Denver. However, I don't want to put a lot of trust in anything I've seen in a preseason game and will wait-and-see how well the defense will pressure the quarterback in actual games.

The anticipation is kind of building isn't it. After all, this whole scheme/talent debate has been going on for over 6 months now, and we are getting ready o see how it all plays out.

Spencer is in kind of a bad spot. Fans will be looking to see something special from him, but he's still wet behind the ears - both in the NFL and at 3-4 OLB, so he may not have the immediate impact we want.

Spears and Canty truly are the ones with the most to prove. Especially Spears, who has constantly offered excuses. The time is now, and I hope he takes advantage. I'm still skeptical, but I'll keep an open mind.

IF pressure is the goal, I believe Hatcher and Ratliff probably have more to offer than Spears and Canty.

I share the exact same opinion on all points! Hatch and Ratliff are more productive pass rushers. We do have to keep in mind, they played a lot on passing downs which is to their advantage, but still, I am confident in those 2.

It will be hard for Spencer to live up to our expectations. But he will have an opportunity to have a big impact. Hes in a good situation.

I, too, wonder about our two starting defensive ends. In this one-gap scheme, they must be able to get off blocks. Will they? That much remains to be seen.

As for Spencer, put me in the camp that he could very well struggle early on. In fact, I'm pretty sure he will. But I also believe at some point, the light will come on, and when it does, this defense will take it up several notches.

Obviously, it would be wonderful to have the Greg Ellis we are accustomed to, ready to roll this Sunday. Short of that, the potential return on Spencer's on-the-job training could be well worth the problems we endure early on.

As for Hatcher, it's easy. Must get snaps for this kid. He may not be starting Sunday night. But something tells me it won't be easy keeping him off the field.

Agree David. That was the beauty of Charles Haley. If he wasn't putting the QB on his back, he was breathing DOWN his back so hard that that was enough to disrupt the play. We don't have that player on this team, despite the Ware comparisions.

I loved Charles Haley because he did BOTH-put pressure on & got sacks. We DO have that player in Ware, but not much else. You have to have at least 2-3 players who put steady pressure on the entire backfield, pushing it back every down.

Look at the 70s teams. They had so many players that could pin their ears back & rock the backfield, that we pretty much took it for granted that they were going to blow up any 3rd & long play! Wow, to have a defense like those again. To have the kind of defense Phillips wants, we need to draft quicker, faster DLs to bring pressure up the middle. The fastest way between two points is a straight line, and all that stuff.

If I remember correctly, Haley only had double digit sacks (10.5 and 12.5) in two seasons with the Cowboys. Haley's greatest strength was seemingly almost always putting pressure on opposing QBs, and allowing others on the team to make plays as a result. Sacks are great, but the next best thing is to intimidate the QB into making mistakes and throwing interceptions.

The biggest thing I'm looking for in the defense this year is the ability to actually disguise the blitz. Wade seems to be pretty good at that, while Zimmer almost always seemed to be horrible at that. The notion of perceived pressure is almost as important as actual pressure leading to sacks.

As someone as almost certainly pointed out, showing everything the defense is capable of in the preseason is not a smart move. Don't base the expectations on X sacks per preseason game.

While this is true, you would still expect to see some tangible signs that the defense has changed. I haven't really seen that.

honestly he has never been what most fans thought he was, I dont even think most fans realize he is the same size as ellis and naturally he is limited to being one dimensional. I dont think he could ever play backpedaling and having to cover anyone.

he is big and heavy and I am not sure that is what phillps is looking for, when you look at khari long and justin rogers they look like the prototype for what phillips wants, long arms, athletic and quick.
6"4 and around 250.

Glymph did have 27 sacks I believe in college, but I just dont think he is a worthy of a roster spot, and I think that is why they cut him, in a month will he be able to cover anyone? Will he have improved his pass rush technique enough to get on the field?

HHuuuuhhhhhh??????????? Big & heavy? Did you even watch the Indi game? This big, clumsy oaf was so quick, he was called off-sides, when, after reveiwing the film, his coaches confirmed that he was so fast, the refs mistakenly called him off-sides. How about several plays later? When, after seeing that the RT was slow in his back-pedal, Glymph went horizontal, about 6" off the ground, spun around the RT, and took out the QB's legs for a sack. Wow, what a sweat hog!! Glad we got rid of that slow, heavy slug. :laugh2: .

I just wish some of you would actually watch the players before you make these silly comments. When I watch Glymph, it's hard for me to realize he is as big as he is, due to his speed & agility. Here's hoping the Browns, my second team, snatch Glymph up & use him to the best of his abilities.

While you sit and gloat about your knowledge and talk down to others, you should take a break and realize a few things.

First - the coaches disagreed with you, so obviously your analysis isn't that accurate from the perspective of the guys that watched him live and on film every day.

Second, Glymph got a lot of his snaps against backups and guys who may not have even made their team, so let's not get too carried away with talk of his dominant play.
