Is it just me, or does it seem like we are getting a little ahead of ourselves when it comes to McQuistan. Most talk about him like he is a guarantee to be good and to start in place of Flo after he is done. I don't think we can say that, I don't think any of us have seen enough from him to proclaim him good. Now I'm not saying he wont be, I'd love nothing more than for him to turn into a very good tackle. But we just don't know that yet.

The coaches and scouts do see him and apparently are very high on him. It doesn't matter where you take them, just if they can play or not.

I am aware of the high opinion of him by the coaches and I made no mention of where he was picked. But how many times did Parcells talk up a player in a press conference only to see him released a week later. We need to see him play more before we can truly make those judgements.

I was about to make this same thread. He might pan out to be very good, but there is nothing to go off of that says he will be a lock at starter. He is a project, just like Marten. And the more projects you have, the higher the likelihood that one will pan out.

I think the staff's opinion is important - remember, they saw so much improvement in his game that he was active for the playoff game. That says something when you go into a playoff game with an untested 7th round rookie over an experienced vet.

I think it is just you.

Jerry Jones isn't getting ahead of himself. He paid major bucks for Leonard Davis, who can also play tackle. An OT was the second player picked by Jerry Jones last night.

The Cowboys aren't acting like a team that has put all their eggs in the McQuistan basket.

Nothing wrong with being hopeful about a longshot prospect - as long as you don't bet the farm on him coming through.

I did rcome across a one sentence statement probably in the Dallas media that the Cowboys planned use McQuistan this year as the swing OT behind Adams and Colombo. Also saw somewhere the statement that he has been a workout warrior this offseason at VR. While I also don't want put all eggs in same basket, it is possible he has progressed during last season as they expected and is now viewed as a possible legit OT backup. Heck if all he ever becomes is a decent backup that's great for a 7th rounder. But of course we all hope/expect more.

Hopefully with Marteen and McQ we have two very good prospects for the future.

Hes a head scratcher for sure. I never heard of the guy till we picked him up. I read about him on the board, coming in and filling Flos shoes like thats not a big deal to do? I suppose we will see this training camp. He was good enough to stick around last year. Thats a plus, but thats about all I can really say about the guy.

Heres to hoping hes a player.

another way to look at this is where McQ would be drafted if teams had a "do over" -- he certainly wouldn't be a 1st rounder or maybe not even a first day pick -- but he's clearly be picked much earlier this time around.

I wasn't really directing my post at Valley Ranch. It was more meant to say what CR said in his post above. The one position that I believe you always have to consider upgrading, and that you can never have enough of, is the O-line. For this reason I liked the Marten pick because it gives us a better chance of hitting on a good starting tackle down the line. Some people didn't like picking an OT because of McQuistan and I was just saying the he's not a guarantee.

Sparano sang his praises. Other teams were calling and wanting him late in the pre season after he had played some games replacing the Hotel. So you just have to accept that and move on.

Agreed.

Some folks might be. As always, we won't know much until he sees extensive game action with legitimate NFL talent opposing him. And that hasn't happened yet.

I wouldn't point to coach's accolades or preseason performance as any sort of affirmation. As Bill Parcells would always quip: Let's see what does he do when the real bullets are flying.

Better odds of development come in numbers. I also agree with CR there.

The staffs opinion is definitely important. That doesn't mean they are always correct. Al Johnson, Jacob Rogers come immediately to mind. We'll see.

I've ALWAYS said, you can never have enough OL.

It isn't just you. I am also loyal to our draft picks, but not blindly.

i'm ok with the James Marten pick but I'm still trying to figure out where he stands on this team. Obviously he'll make the roster, but you can't carry 4 tackles with you on gameday. I think McQuistan could be the "Rob Petitti" of training camp. He'll get cut and Marten will be the swing man.
