Pat Summerall on The Irvin Show - 5/27/08

One of the worse announcer's I have ever heard is Troy Aikman...

let me give an example... during the Commander week 11 match up last season he had a comment similiar to this

Julius Jones really runs well when there are no defenders... (oh Really, don't everybody):banghead: or something very similiar to that....

and oh there are so many more... I honestly can not listen to him... I could at least listen to Gumball (I know its not spelled that way) to get a laugh or two...

but Aikman drives me crazy...lets say someone fumbles the football...a typical comment would be like this

Buck> "Troy, Schmoo just fumbled the football"
Aikman> (with his strange half laugh, half clearing throat) "ha Joe, Schmoo should hold on to the football"
.
me> thinking no duh Einstein.
.
.
more... okay
.
.
Buck> " Team X just ran it up the gut for a TD"

Aikman> (with that strange thing he does) "ha, Joe, they got the ball in the endzone to get that TD"

me> pulling my hair out begging God to please make him stop

If I just had a dollar for every one of these posts.....

"Murder ................ She Wrote"

It used to make me laugh when he'd say that.

As far as Buck goes, he's just too effeminate to be calling pro football games.

I'd be perfectly fine with him as a movie critic, travel reporter, a Food Network type, etc., but I just don't like girlish comments from guys who are calling a football game.

Funny with all the Summerall love I'm seeing - I remember a day when most couldn't wait to get him outta the booth...........grass ain't always greener so they say...

Exactly.

Summerall's pause when saying that while promoting Sunday night TV lineup was classic.

And I totally agree about Joe Buck. David Spade could play him in a movie.

Amen. Buck really needs to be doing figure skating or working for E!... Just not calling football.

During his last years of his career, he made too many mistakes. But during the majority of his career, he was darn good IMO.

... of course it was also a different game back then. Fewer substitutions then, greater continuity, etc. Today it is too tough for announcers to keep viewers informed of each player who is leaves or enters the game on a particular down.

That's because he was drunk all the time.

I saw Summerall's book (hardback) on the sale table at Hastings for only $3.

Anyone else read it?
