Patrick Peterson Declares for Draft...Welcome to Dallas

Wasn't Darren Woodson a LB at college? I've seen people speculate on Peterson's best position in the pros and he has been linked to the FS position. I don't feel qualified to speculate on whether or not it's a good idea, but it has been done before, with some success on various teams.

I just hope the new Defensive Coordinator findss a scheme that brings out the best, regardless of where we pick them. Do we know what we have in AOA? Does that factor in who we look at?

Ronnie Lott moved from CB to Safety

Lots of guys have made the conversion. Mel Renfro was a Pro Bowl safety his first 4 years in the league, All Pro twice and then switched to CB and was an Pro Bowl CB 6 more times and All Pro 3 more times. Cornell Green did the same thing for us, although not quit as succesfully, he made 5 Pro Bowls at both CB and Safety.

There are others who have done this as well. I don't think it's impossible but I do have reservations about taking a top 10 player and having to switch him from CB to Safety. I am also in the camp who sees Peterson as more of a Safety in the NFL then a CB.

reminds me a lot of Antrel Rolle when he came out of miami. While he did not go straight to Saftey, he made the Pro Bowl as a saftey. The second player he reminds me of is Malcom Jenkins with the Saints. Again, last year he played CB and this year he started at saftey. By all accounts, Red would have one more win if not for the Jenkins play. I watched a few games, and he looked solid at Saftey.

Jenkins was drafted 14 by the Saints. If the guy has tight hips, he is not going to do well at CB, I don't care where he is drafted. Both Rolle and Jenkins have tight hips. Rolle was also a tad bit slow.

I follow the SEC a lot, and have watched Peterson play. I'm no draft scout, but he looks and plays more like a FS than a CB to me. I think if he is playing CB against big WR ala Larry Fitzgerald, he looks good. Asked to play against more shiftty guys like Donald Driver or Greg Jennings, and he looks lost. I like him at FS at 9, and I like him in man coverage against most tight ends not named Jason Witten or Dallas Clark.

If he checks in at 220 at twenty years of age, then I would expect that he will continue to grow. I don't see a guy 6-1 being able to put on too much more weight and being able to shift weight quickly enough to play CB against smaller WRs. One of the things I see when I watch him play is lack of explosion in and out of breaks or to the ball. I mean, I don't watch LSU religiously but of the few games that I've seen this year, I just have not seen that. I actually taped the Cotton bowl and that was the one thing that jumped out at me. He was almost always in decent position and he understood his assignment by all appearances but I didn't see that explosion that I think you see with all the really good CBs in the NFL.

I think his frame is close to being maxed. And I agree, he is just not sudden at CB. Now on returns, he is very sudden and has good top end speed like the kid from USC that went to SF. Peterson is a good football player, I think FS will be his best spot.

Unless some dirt in revealed on Peterson I don't see him falling to our pick.

Charlie Waters moved from CB to safety. I'd argue that he qualified as "successful" at that position.

1. He doesn't have a choice.

2. He's going to be paid whatever the market holds for the number he's picked, regardless of position. If he's #9 overall, he's getting paid #9 money, regardless if he's a CB, S or a WR. Only if he was a QB that might change.

Anyway, Andrew Luck not electing for the draft hurt our chance. Hopefully Mallett, Locker and company will see their draft stock rise.

Not a good to start with any player to put him in a position he has not played. If Dallas needs to get a safety get a safety drafting a top CB taken with the 9th overall pick and then moved to another position he has not played is not a smart move

He was a 3rd rd pick and was not doing a good job at CB, he became a pro bowl player at Safety

It's not like he's moving from CB to WR.

No it is like drafting Cam Newton with a top 5 pick and then making him a RB. Could he do it? Maybe so maybe not but you don't pick a guy that high in the draft and then hope he can play another spot. Safety have different responsibility than a CB does. Peterson is considered the best CB in college football if you draft him that high then put him in the position that he knows the best so that you can get the best out of him.

It is?

It is when you take a guy out of a position he has had great success in and your 1st move is to put him in a position he has not played. CB and Safety are not the same position or have the same responsiblity. I'm not saying Peterson could not make the move but I think that is something you do later in his career not at the start and not when your picking that high to get him.

I don't even know how I ended up on this side of the argument, I want him to play corner.

I just think he could find success at FS, but mostly, I just want a good FS. :laugh2:

I want a good FS as well I just don't think you start a guy with Peterson talent at CB and move him into a spot he has not played. Even Ronnie Lott spent his 1st 4 seasons at CB before moving him to safety and he has some past experiance at safety as far as I know Peterson does not.

I think if you want to experiment with a player you do it with guys taken later in the draft not a top 10 pick.

Eh, i don't know that alot of teams arn't looking at Peterson as a FS though.

220+ lbs is huge for a CB, and there are serious questions as to how well he'll be able to flip his hips and turn and run with the speed receivers in the NFL.

No doubt he's a tremendous talent, but he might be best suited for FS in the big boys league.

I don't know if they are, face it you don't draft a guy that high and turn around and play him at a spot he has never played before. Hell if you have to do that he is not worth that high of a pick.

Hey, im not trying to argue. Im just saying i don't see many 6'1" 220+ lb. CB's around the NFL.

Certainly there can be exceptions, but i think the fluidity of PP's hips and his ability to be able to turn and run with some of the speedier receivers in the NFL will be a major question.

That's a big dude to try and make quick breaks and cuts.

Antrel Rolle and Malcomb Jenkins were both drafted at CB and now play saftey.
