Patrick Peterson: Sherman not a shutdown corner

Richard Sherman is never one to back down in a war of words. Enter Patrick Peterson.

The Arizona Cardinals star didn't hold back Thursday when asked about Sherman's claims that he's the NFL's best cornerback.

"I don't want to get in a debate as far as stats that he has and things like that," Peterson said during an interview on KMVP-FM. "Obviously his job is definitely much easier than mine. But if you look at their scheme and at our scheme, he's a Cover 3 corner. Period.

"A lot of guys say he's a shutdown corner. But if you look at film and guys who understand the game, go back and look at film and see how his defense is. I believe that if you put him in our system, I don't believe he'll be able to last, honestly. Because I actually do much more than he is (doing)."

He's might be right, it wouldn't be the first time someone succeeded in one system and failed in another but thats saying allot when you say he couldn't learn to play in his system. Sherman might have a cousin swing by Pats house and tear up his mailbox for that kinda talk.

I'm getting tired of all these "I'm better than he is" comments from players. It's getting annoying.

I don't believe there is a thing as a shut down corner anymore. The rules are so offensive biased that you can' do the things you used to.

Just because Sherman doesn't follow the number 1 WR doesn't mean he's not shutdown.

Patrick Peterson is asked to do more than Sherman, but he doesn't do his respective job as well.

Sherman doesn't get nearly as much time in man coverage, but let's not pretend he's not excellent at that as well.

I loved Peterson coming out of college, but he is the inferior cb.

Revis. Sherman. Huge gap. Everyone else.

shutdown Corner or not he played damn good football. I think people get caught up in the term" shut down down CB". All CB will get beat from time to time but the guys who can step up and make the big plays I'll gladly take them and Sherman did just that went out and made big plays to help his team win.

Tune into Nick Jr is you're sick of men acting like men.

Men keep their mouth shut and do their job. Only boys open their mouth and degrade others. This is why I respect players like Adrian Peterson and Calvin Johnson, who know they're the best in the game and don't have to open their mouth and let everyone know.

I do know one thing, Sherman has the luxury of having probably the best safety tandem in the league playing behind him. That's a real privilege.

There's certainly no "Sherman Island" in that scheme.

Bottom line is that Seattle won the Super Bowl and he was outstanding, so Sherman is doing what he's supposed to do within that scheme.

I don't think Peterson isn't saying that Sherman hasn't performed well. He really shouldn't be compared to those three corners, who've been trusted by their coaching staffs to shadow the best WR of the opposing team. Sherman has never had that responsibility, whether he could outperform these players doing that isn't proven.

Correct.

Saw another graphic where it showed him and a few others and the percentage of plays where each one plays on the left AND right side of the field. Sherman was no where near Peterson in switching sides of the field. It was comically low for Sherman.

Because Patrick shadows another teams best WR whether they are one the left or right or if they move the WR around. Sherman just covers one area of the field.

Furthermore Patricks touches in the return game give him a bit of a leg up.

Exactly. This is something that DeAngelo Hall was poorly trying to convey with his Twitter war of words with Sherman a couple months back.

Eagles running back LeSean McCoy thinks -- and he said as much -- he's the best running back in the NFL. He's allowed to think that because a) he led the league in rushing yards, b) he's a professional athlete so confidence is good and c) freedom of speech.

Adrian Peterson doesn't have to agree though. And, surprise surprise, the Vikings running back doesn't agree with Shady's claim. In fact, he told Jay Mohr of Fox Sports Radio he thinks it's "funny."

"I definitely started laughing,” Peterson said. “It was funny because when Stephen [A. Smith] asked him the question, you know, he kind of hesitated. If you watched it, you know he didn't believe it when he said it. So I've got to tell the youngsters, ‘Next time, say it with your chest, man. Say it like you mean it!'"

He responded to that idiot McCoy. AP didn't come out and say he was the best randomly.
