I mean this isn't that great of a move.
The Pats are an impressive organization and all, but Dwayne Allen averaged 30 yds a game last year.
It's a very good move, but not for the reasons people think. But to understand why you have to dig a little.
If Bennett leaves for big money and the Patriots don't sign a tight end in free agency, they get a comp pick that's probably a 3rd or 4th rounder next year.
They gave up a 4th rounder for Allen and a 6th.
The Colts already paid the front-loaded part of Allen's contract.
So to recap: the Patriots are probably paying a net of basically
nothing in draft picks for a player to have him under contract for several years, after the most expensive year of the contract (the first) WAS ALREADY PAID BY THE COLTS.
