Pats Fans React to Milton Trade

I’ll play…..

I would like for the third string developmental QBs contract to not expire one year BEFORE the current starter, a record-setting deal they cannot get out of without massive pain….or talking him into a trade while he builds his dream house in Dallas.

I’d be pumped over having a guy with Milton’s skills if the above wasn’t the case. What do we do now? Root for a Dak injury? It’s not even guaranteed they wouldn’t use Grier anyway, like Rush over Lance last year.
So you are happy with Milton’s skills but you are unhappy with how we got him and his contract length? So would you be happier if we drafted a QB in the first round. That seems to be the only scenario that would guarantee that the QB would be her longer than Dak.

If you’re looking for any QB to replace Dak then you’re not going to be happy for at least 3 years. That bad decision was made by our FO at the beginning of last season. If you’re looking for a backup QB that didn’t cost much draft capital and is one third cheaper against the cap the Lance or Rush then you’ll be happy with this. It just depends what you’re looking for.

Yup, I like Miltons upside a lot, but no one can tell me there’s a clear plan/lane to develop him after signing Dak to a record deal. Milton needs reps. When’s that happening?

My complaint has little to do with Milton himself, but there being no plan when it comes to player acquisition. It’s similar to the Lance situation. Made no sense timing wise.

Best case here involves talking Dak into a trade, which at those numbers, he is going to have to be playing well and healthy, in which case they probably won’t want to move him.

Milton isn’t currently a viable backup…he is a developmental guy, and there’s a difference. Last year they went with Rush over Lance. Is that going to be different this time around? If so, then why?

They are all over the map with everything. Frustrating. It would be nice if the developmental guys contract didn’t expire before the incumbent. That’s how someone with a clue might try to line things up, but hey….Jerry’s got this. There’s no one better.

Okay, I get what you’re saying. Yes I completely see your points. This reminds me of the Philly game last year when they took Lance out of the game after one play. I screamed at the TV, “why did you trade for him then”.

I do agree I wish Dak’s contract was for just 2 more years so we wouldn’t have to make a decision about Milton. Hopefully Milton plays well enough to have Jerry make a decision about Dak. For this year I’m excited that we got someone on the roster with some upside to him. I agree 100% with what you’re saying tho. I do wish the contracts aligned better.

But if you want to get excited about Milton, jump over to the Boston talk shows. They are not happy. The flagship station for the Patriots (I think it’s the flagship station) is really angry they have Milton away. Basically what they are saying is the buzz around the trade was the Pats wanted Milton gone prior to this week because he was making Drake “uncomfortable”. Apparently Drake is a diva and didn’t want a high maintenance WR much less a confident QB2. I was kind of 50/50 on Milton until I started listening to them. Some of these believe Milton played the best QBing of the season last year and Drake didn’t like how Milton carried himself as “if he was the main guy”. Very interesting. But the Pats radio guys are pretty unhappy about this. Which makes me very happy.

Felger and Mazz. If you YouTube Felger and Mazz show or “Felger and Mazz Patriots” you’ll get the guys that I was talking about. If anyone is interested in what the enemy is saying. These guys can be a little more loose with their tongues because they don’t have a Jerry Jones threatening to fire them. I will say Language Alert on some of their videos, especially when they are talking about Drake being a diva. So earmuff the kids, but yes Language Alert, they’re not happy with how things went down.

I’m happy to have Milton, and they didn’t pay a ton to get him. Esiason and Simms can’t say enough good things about him and I respect them both.

What am I supposed to do now though? Hope my 60 million dollar QB gets hurt? Even so, between the cap hits and dead money there’s no way to have even a year of taking advantage of a cheap QB. Either Milton never plays and you don’t know if you can count on him, or he got the shot to prove himself, does, and you’ll have to pay him dearly…while you also still have Dak on the books for one year plus the void years.

For me, it reeks of them not wanting to have any down seasons ever, and somehow thinking this will ensure that. I honestly fail to see any type of ideal scenario here, which is a shame. They may have been better off letting him play elsewhere and signing him as a free agent three years from now, which is what they are going to have to do anyway, or let him walk….same as Lance.

Maybe Jerry thinks he can hide him for three years then he becomes an instant stud at age 28.

I’m just kinda tired of watching these two screw this up. They are in way over their heads.

How I’m looking at it is realistically Dak will get hurt. He’s only completed 1 season since 2019 without injury. I hope he doesn’t get hurt but odds are he will. If they don’t play Milton while Dak is injured then these two have no business running a team. That would be a complete lack of plan or forward thinking. I feel Milton will play some extended time in ‘25 or ‘26 just due to Dak’s injury history.

As far as the contract goes for Dak I believe we can get out of it after ‘26 which would give us 1 year with a cheap Milton to ease the blow. I don’t know the ins and outs of it but I believe @big dog cowboy broke it down year by year in one thread. I can’t find the exact post but he broke it down on when we can cut Dak and how painful it would be. If I remember right we can get out of it after ‘26. Hopefully he chimes in with the details or someone else with contract/cap knowledge will.

But I firmly believe we will get a hold look at Milton in real games due to Dak being 30 and having 2 major injuries. I hope and pray Dak doesn’t get injured for his sake and ours but it’s more than likely it happens.

They would need to cut him in March of 2026 to avoid 45 million in salary for 2027 becoming guaranteed, while the 40 million for the 2026 season is already guaranteed as we speak…and this is in cash that he hasn’t yet received, not the dead money hit.

That’s why a trade is the only way out, but who is taking him at that salary if he still shows to be injury prone….which would be the only way Milton gets a real chance.

I think we’re getting a little ahead of ourselves. We have to see what happens with Milton this season. I also think regardless of Milton if Dak keeps regressing like he did in ‘24 prior to the injury then he may be out the door after ‘26 anyway. I’m sure we could unload Dak for a 7th rounder to a QB desperate team. I could see a possibility of a QB desperate team wanting Dak even if he’s trending downward. The real question would be if Dak would redo his contract for a trade. But there have been teams that have gotten out of bad contracts in the past. Russell Wilson comes to mind.

Go and look at his film on the last game of the year. 22-29 passing. Does that look to you like he does not know how to pass? I know it was against second stringers, but the accuracy was there nonetheless. What people don't get is that the Pats have decided Maye is their young QB for the foreseeable future. They have a veteran backing him up. They do not need to groom another QB. It does not mean he cannot pass. He is more accurate than Dak and a heck of a lot more athletic. He has real running skills and can

Milton, by far. Trey is just not good. He lacks QB talents. He should switch to wide receiver or running back. I saw enough to say we made a huge mistake trading for Lance. Milton we can work with his raw talents. He also has intangibles.
Except Harbaugh thinks Lance works at QB2.

Wonder why?

We have no choice but to hope Milton fixes his throwing problems. His draft Bio is brutal.

He had 6 NCAA seasons to fix.

That’s why he’s making 1M non GTD.

Unless he cuts Heinike, Lance will be #3 and only make a few million at best.

Milton is still on his rookie deal.

Milton’s game tape in the nfl is awesome.

It is just one game and it was against the B team. But he showed very well. The talent and athleticism is there. Who on the staff has any chance of getting the best out of Milton?

The thing about Joe Milton is that he seems eager to learn - coming out of college he had criticism about his pocket presence, but he improved a lot in the limited playing time he had last year. He moved really well in the pocket while keeping his eyes downfield.

A LOT more to work with here compared to Trey Lance.

The backups made him more accurate?
Isn’t that how it works? Worse pass rush and worse secondary play makes it easier for the qb no?
Out of curiosity @TheMarathonContinues, are you suggesting that he has no accuracy or that he only has accuracy against backups?

I will hold my opinion until I see a larger sample size but I am admittedly more optimistic with his 1 start than I would have been without that start. And I’m having a hard time understanding the logic of completely dismissing his accuracy in that start.

It doesn't matter who it was against. He was accurate and outstanding.
