Everyone here wants to sign Logan Mankins from the Pats but why would Pats let him walk without any compensation? I know he is a URF but put yourself in Pat's position. You got a highly sought after FA and one of the BEST OG in football, why would you let him walk without getting anything in return.

Pat's runs a smart operation. I suspect they will do to Mankins what they did to Cassell. Designate him Franchise Player and trade him for at least a 3 rd pick and let someone else pay the big contract.

Because Mankins is an UFA and the Pats don't have any exclusive rights to the guy. He's free to sign with any team he chooses.

Exactly. You can't franchise an UFA

How can they use the tag when the CBA expires it wont exist, correct?

Then by the time the CBA gets done Mankins had already heard from a little birdie what the Cowboys offer is and agrees.

The thing is though, if nobody buys, they have to pay him a one year deal that is probably more than he's already asking. :)

one thing in our favor is the o-linemen get grouped together. Mankins would get the price of the top 5 LTs not the top 5 Gs. May be too much for NE to swallow.

I'm pretty sure when Mankins and the Pats were going through that ugly situation, the Pats promised not to franchise tag him so he could walk in FA next season. Mankins will NOT re-sign with the Patriots. He will become an UFA.

If I'm the Pats I wouldn't promise him anything. If he sits the entire year, he's still a 5th year player and will be a rfa again. the promise would've been come in to training camp and we'll decline tagging you, but at that point mankins had to come in.

That will depend on the new CBA. Mankin can't sign with anybody until the new CBA is agreed upon anyways, so he's restricted in that regard. More than likely the current UFA will remain so, but it could very well be that the tags would be restored and he could be tagged. Not likely, but possible. He'll, like the rest of us, have to wait and see what's agreed upon.

I agree.

But if a CBA is in place, you would still tag one of the best OG in the business. Yes, you may end up eating the salary and have his service for a year (not exactly a bad deal) but you set yourself up to get something in return which is likely a 2nd or 3rd round pick this yr (even better).

There will be many teams bidding for his services so I am sure teams are willing to trade a pick for him.

The rules will be established in the new collective bargaining agreement.

They won't tag him.

He'll hold out in a heartbeat if they do.
