Pauline: Dallas Covets Buckeyes

If there's a "leak" inside Valley Ranch, then it's on purpose.

So what's the thinking? The Cowboys leaked this info to some internet scout so he can tell the masses?

Psst.....We really want Ramsey but he won't be there so it's either Bosa or Elliott but we would rather trade down for Elliott but not past 9. Go...and tell the others.

I'm convinced people put stock into these reports simply for the entertainment value and not because there's a real rational reason to believe any of it is true.

Or, and I realize this requires giving the organization a little credit, they could be purposefully feigning interest in a bunch of different guys to make their true intentions less clear.

I mean we have been linked to just about every guy in the Top 10 with the exception of the OL -- Ramsey, Jack, both QBs, Bosa, Buckner, Elliott, Smith (before the injury)

Buckeyes for all! Dallas should just stockpile Buckeyes.

1. Joey Bosa, DE
2. Braxton MIller,WR
or
1. Ezekiel Elliot, RB
2. Noah Spence, DE

He is not questioning your divine devotion.

But I feel pretty strongly that Jones still worships the false God Romo.

In this story Jerry is the one trying to convince Adam and Eve to take a bite of the apple.

He would have just sent Stephen but fat doesn't slither very well.

I don't buy the Elliott love. I think we covet a backup RB who can spell McFadden and take over next year rather than an immediate starter. We've seen that late-pick RBs can have success, especially behind an elite line. We have too many holes to spend our highest pick in 20+ years on a RB. I do buy the interest in a DE but I'm hoping they address that in free agency so they aren't forced to go that route.

About the only team they could deal down with would be SF. But I don't see why they would move past Baltimore or Jacksonville.

If they trade down, it is out of the top ten. That would be a silly move unless someone gives up the farm. Just stay put.

I think trading down could easily backfire if we covet Elliot. If Bosa is gone and Elliot's the player we want, then just take him at No. 4.

We've seen too many times in the past where Dallas wanted a player but missed out on him because someone ahead of them took him.

If our board is Ramsey, Bosa and Elliot, then take whoever is still available at our pick (probably in that order).

But that logic goes against the thought process most people say.

Well, you should just "trade down and get value".

If you value the player as the fourth best in the draft, what is the point in risking it?

It is just like QB. If they feel there is a franchise one at four, take him. Forget about all of this "value" nonsense.

If they feel that only three players in this draft are better than Elliott, why would you get cute and trade down?

If we do pick one of them, lets hope they turn out better than the last Buckeye we took in the first round.

Bobby Carpenter is one reason I don't get all caught up in Dallas having to take a certain player. I thought Carpenter was a lock to at least be solid.

Now, I think Bosa is going to be a worth the pick, but if he goes before our pick or we decide to go in another direction, I'm not going to be upset over it.

I think you only trade down if there are enough players that you covet between where you pick and where you're going to end up picking that it doesn't matter to you which player you get.

If Dallas doesn't feel that way (and it probably shouldn't drafting this high), it shouldn't trade down.

I think we tend to buy into the line of thinking that this player should go at point A and this one at point B ... and there's some truth to that ... when getting the guy you want can be more important than where he's ranked. The problem is when you veer too much into the other argument and reach for that guy you want, passing up much better players (potentially).

There are plenty of off the record conversations taking place between scouts/GM's/coaches/owners and the media. Starts in Indy at The Combine (at Champs inside the Marriott, at Shula's inside the Westin, at St. Elmo and the Conrad). It continues at the Pro Days as well since it's the same cast of characters at the major school Pro Days. There will be even more next week in Boca.

These reports will be coming out frequently and a lot are fact based. Teams aren't shy about telling folks off the record who they like as players. They won't declare that they are necessarily leaning one way or another but they openly discuss prospects they like. Same happens with free agency and tampering that occurs at The Combine.

For the QB or bust crowd there will be plenty of stories about them following their Pro Days and they won't be any less true. Teams may like five or six players in the top 5. This is a non-story.

I like Bosa and Elliot. Ideally you'll have to stay in front of Philly though because they will take Elliot if he's still there.

"In the past few drafts, often we'd be picking lower in the first round, and we'd just miss out on a guy we had targeted," Roseman told MMQB. "This year we felt there was a big dropoff after 10 players, so I talked to people about trying to move into the top 10."

Now, that's the opinion of one GM out of 32 and teams don't always view an individual player or a draft class as a whole in the same way. But if Roseman has company when it comes to that belief, then teams with the ammo for a trade-up are likely at least doing their due diligence on what it would take to get into the top 10.

As for whom the Eagles could be targeting at No. 8, there's a belief that the deal with the Dolphins might have been fueled by the Eagles' desire to beat Miami to the punch for Ohio State's Ezekiel Elliott. Both teams have a need at running back, and Elliott is the No. 1 player at the position. For Philly, Elliott could replace DeMarco Murray, who was dealt to the Tennessee Titans last week.

We will look back at this offseason with great regret. For me, probably the worst we've seen since Jimmy left.

Wow. That's saying a lot because there have been some abysmal drafts since Jimmy left.
