I propose that the team should begin fining their players for their performance (or lack thereof).

This would make players think twice about reaching around for that hold, or trying that cool superman flying tackle that totally whiffs.

Penalties:

False start? $5,000.
Intentional grounding? $5,000.
Personal foul? $15,000.
Holding? $10,000.

Basically $1,000 per negative yard due to penalty.

Stupidity:

Missed field goal? $7,500 -- $2,500 per point lost.
Blown coverage? $750 per yard gained by the offensive player/returner.
Whiffed tackle? $750 per yard gained after the attempted tackle.
Romo sacked? $10,000 to player(s) that caused it.
Dropped a catchable pass or interception? $7,500.
Thrown interception? $15,000.
No interceptions in a game? $5,000 per player in the secondary.
No sacks? $5,000 per player in the front 7.
No touchdowns? $5,000 per offensive player.

I don't know if there are rules or limitations on the amounts that a team can fine a player, but I think that something like this would really wake some people up.

You would be a real blast at the next collective bargaining meeting.

Thanks for your valuable input. How would you fix the penalties and idiocy of this team?

As I said before. Just have a Guillotine on the sidelines for anyone who makes a mistake. :D

Yes there are rules and limitations and the NFLPA would be all over that list.

By benching the players that keep repeating the mistakes, no matter who it is.

By being hard on those players in practice, no matter who it is.

By getting the team back to a mindset of toughness and discipline.

Fining millionaires, or some players that are close to millionaires is pointless..

Yeah the fines wouldn't do all that much. If fines mattered a ton you wouldn't see players all over the league getting fined for personal fouls etc. Here, here's my lunch money boss, sorry about that.

Need to bench players when they play bad and continually make stupid mistakes.

If the NFLPA actually decertify like it appears most of the players are voting to do, they (the NFLPA) can't do a damn thing about it.

That is if...right now it is not.

This. It seems to me that the only way you're going to get into a millionaire ballplayer's head is to hurt their ego a bit by benching them. And if they don't have the kind of pride that would make them nauseous at the thought, then I just don't know what to say...they probably don't belong on anyone's roster.

Fining them, unless it's for a significant amount, just isn't going to work.

Oh but we can't bench a player for poor performance--just like HH did to RG Davis. Once Holland got hurt, Wade put Davis back in the game (admittedly he didn't have a viable other OG & Davis played better once he got back) but still Wade announced Davis would be our starter against the Vikes. What does that tell rest of the Cowboy players & also what does HH think about what Wade did?

Yep. Unfortunately, roster limits prevent benching most players so the fear of having their pride hurt isn't much of a factor.

I dunno if Houck was supportive of the Davis' reinstatement or not, but I tend to think that benching him was more of a shot across the bow than anything intended to be a permanent move. Then again, I've given up trying to divine what in the blue-hell is going on at Valley Ranch anymore.

Players salaries are too high...In the good old days, don't you just love that saying :) but anyhow, back then playoff and Superbowl money were worth something and teams played together to get that money.

Now its about individual stats and individual salaries.

Its not about fining the players for doing stupid things. The solution is to give each player a low base salary and loading up their contracts with huge incentives to achieve.
If the player decides they want to make the big bucks then they will have to make the effort to reach those incentives. Otherwise they get their small base salary and no more.
It's very frustrating to see these huge contracts given to some players only to see them offer minimal effort during games because they know their money is guaranteed and even if they are cut, they are already set for life.

You wanna' see a much better NFL, or any other professional sport, low base, high incentive contracts is the only way to go.

I wonder though, if you'd see some serious schisms on the team if most of a player's salary is tied to incentives. I like the idea in concept, but I don't know that it would be practical. Unless, maybe, the incentives in your contract were team (or split into offense/defense/special teams) based incentives rather than personal incentives?

If you thought TO was bad, just wait until you see receivers not getting the ball and losing money because of it.

Larry Fitzgerald would be hurting this year with Max Hall at quarterback.

The idea sounds good on the surface, but delve further down and it would destroy the sport.
