Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell portrays himself as a regular guy who likes sports, and it seems to get him the sports fan vote, even when he's running against a sports icon like former Steelers wide receiver Lynn Swann. (Rendell trounced Swann in November.)

But it's time for Rendell to stop already with his annoying habit of criticizing the Eagles' draft picks. He did it in 1999, when they chose Donovan McNabb instead of Ricky Williams, and now he's doing it again.

"It boggles the entire mind," Rendell told Bloomberg Television when asked about the Eagles' decision to use their top draft pick on University of Houston quarterback Kevin Kolb. "It was stunning to all of us."

Rendell said the Eagles should have used their top draft choice on Southern Cal wide receiver Dwayne Jarrett, who was taken nine picks after Kolb by the Carolina Panthers.

"I think we are going to rue the day we didn't pick him," Rendell said.

I'd give Rendell a pass if it weren't for his past history with draft analysis. But given how Rendell's beloved Ricky Williams is doing right now, he's probably not the person whose opinion should be consulted on such matters.

I like the guy. He was at the stadium when Santa was bombed, and probably contributed.

In regard to Williams, let's be honest about it. No one saw his personal problems, and when he did play, he was one of the best in the game. He probably would have been a HOF RB if he would have stayed clean.

Although there are some chinks in the armor, McNabb is still untouchable in the media's eyes. You can lose your job if you are too critical of McNabb.

Eagles fans are notorious for booing their draft choices. In fact, I can't remember a 1st pick they didn't boo when it was announced. Then, when the guy plays well, they cheer and claim they loved the pick all along, when he has a bad game they say, see, we knew it from day-1.

Face it, they're just crabby people.

The Governor of my State should be trying to lower my sky high property taxes rather then worry about McNabb and Kolb.

Governor Rendell should have kept his opinion private. IMO, he obviously made his comments public to score points with his Pennsylvania based Eagles fans/voters, but his point is somewhat valid in this case. McNabb has had only one all-around number one receiver to throw to during his time in Philadelphia and that was Owens. He's only had various guys who were legitimate number two or number three type receiving threats (Pinkston, Thrash, etc.).

Even Stallworth was only a borderline number one receiver at best. Jarrett was one of the last top-rated wide receivers on the board after Philadelphia traded down. If he translates his USC talent to the NFL, he will be great receiving talent for Delhomme and the Panthers and could have been one for McNabb and the Eagles.

Still, Rendell should have acknowledged the fact that the quarterback he booed in '99 has had the injury bug almost every season. If McNabb goes down, so will the Eagles' best offensive chances of being effective. Lurie and Reid had to address that very real possibility and they did with the Kolb selection.

I agree with the Governor.

Jarrett over Kolb.

Mcnabb still has a lot of game left in him. I mean, he was putting up record numbers in the first 6 games last year. The injuries are a concern, but I think they should have still drafted at WR.

Who cares about Pittsburgh?

Nobody from Philly likes Pittsburgh. The city can become part of Ohio for all I care.

Very good point. He's alienating some Pittsburgh-affliated voters. Not a very smart political move. If someone wanted him to shut up, they could call him on that.

that's fine that you think that way, but not for a governor.
