He played for Parcells, worked under Bellichek and knows the 3-4....I think he's a perfect fit. Wondering what you guys think?

I would not be opposed, but still think it will be Todd Bowles.

I agree....just don't know how a guy who never played in the 3-4 from what I know, worked under a DC who obviously was over his head with the system could possibly be an upgrade.
Johnson has had great success with the Pats linebackers and now D-line and knows the system as well as anyone.

Is Johnson even in his final contract year in New England? Either way, if the Patriots make it to the Super Bowl, it'll be how long before we got to hire him? I somehow doubt the Senior Bowl circus will begin on Monday without our staff having been mostly firmed up. That's my suspicion.

On the question of Pepper Johnson, I think it depends on how close he realistically thinks he is to being ready to take a run at a serious head coaching job.

With only 1 year perceived to be left on Parcells' time here, some people assume it will keep coaches from coming here. But the ones who aspire to make the leap to head coach would have to see it as a strong foot-in-the-door situation in a place where an even better job is about to be available to all comers.

If I'm a potential defensive coordinator looking at a situation like Dallas' defense is in, and I get the chance to come in and be the golden boy Johnny Come Lately, I jump at it.

Because if the defense turns around, I take heaps of credit at best. And at worst, I hold them hostage to where they'd be afraid letting me go because they don't want to lose the progress we made in 2007.

And if the defense doesn't turn around, I have a built-in excuse with a weak pass rush and a secondary that doesn't seem to specialize in covering people, and too many guys who maybe I'd have liked to replace but their contracts dictated otherwise... not to mention the fact that any steps backwards in Dallas this year will almost surely be blamed on someone named Owens or Parcells.

Suppose I'm Pepper Johnson and I come here and the team stays stagnant. Do I take the blame? No. Does my reputation suffer? Not really, except maybe in the Belichick household. Do I have trouble finding a job? No way. I just pack a bag and go take a fine job that will almost surely be offered to me by the Jets or Browns (or Notre Dame, if I'm feeling particularly saucy).

Plus, I'd know that if I really knocked it out of the park in my first year running the defense here, I'd basically be guaranteed to be a finalist for the head coaching gig the next year. I mean, if our defense puts it together this year and we have 40-something sacks and a good number of turnovers, our coordinator will be the toast of the town and the apple of Jerry's eye.

Pepper would be a great choice if Parcells decides to come back. I think he will give the defense a sense of passion for the game.

Pepper would be a great hire. He's successfully played and coached the 3-4. And has been around a championship organization these past 5 years.
I also love the drill they run in NE with the LB's. Each day after practice they all have to catch 10 balls from 10 yards away that Pepper fires himself. If they drop one the entire LB unit does push-ups. If they catch them all Pepper does the push-ups. Thats why they make plays and our guys have KEY drops in those KEY situations.
More importantly, Bill may allow him to attack more on D since Bill can take credit by saying "he's my guy, blah, blah, blah.

Do it!

I really think BP needs to tell everyone his intentions and make a run at this guy.
If you have one year left you owe to yourself to put together the best possible staff and make a serious run....leave your ego at the door Bill.
I doubt it happens, but to me it makes so much sense it's ridiculous.

I mentioned this as well. I think it would be a good fit if Dallas was to look outside the organization.

Tell me why any assistant coach on a Super bowl team would leave that position to go to a team where the head coach is surely in his last season, and then be up for grabs when the new coach arrives.

It would be an upgrade for him to be named DC. Right now he is only the line coach for the Pats.

Why does he need to tell everyone his intentions to make a run for this guy? The only one that would need to know would be Pepper wouldn't it?

He doesn't have to tell anyone but Pepper and the Pats (he's going to need permission to talk to him).

1. He is a defensive line coach currently...this is a promotion.

2. He knows Bill.

3. If Bill leaves and Pepper does a great job...guess whose in line to become HC, at worst he writes his own ticket with someone to become DC somewhere.

4. If Bill leaves and the "d" isn't that great.... the perception will probably be the HC was a lame duck and the team probably wasn't that motivated.

Pepper might be a good line coach...but can he handle the complexity of running a 3-4 scheme? There is a big difference between making linebackers do push-ups after practice and setting up a game plan that will confuse well coached offenses.
