No. It pays him a lot now and just accounts for it during later years. Reduces future cap space but hasn't added any talent to the team. Hasn't even put them in a position to do so yet.

It also means they'll restructure him next year.

Just doesn't seem logical to me.

Adding the $750K to Scandrick for the next five years is rather inventive. Never seen a third cornerback get used like this. I bet he is happy.

Hey. It takes work to give a $25M contract and still be on the hook for $10M in cap charges at year 4.

It is simply floating around a playing with imaginary money with regards to the cap. These contracts are all full of trap doors, all with the express purpose of having a getaway car waiting at the door prior to the cap deadline. The sad thing is that you will end up paying real money and never see the end result of production through the length of the contract.

Why anyone thought it would is beyond me.
It's called hope; one of the bosses here has wanted the Cowboys to go out and get Colt MCoy. He says with Colt at QB, the Cowboys are set to win 3 or more Super Bowls in a row!

I'm not making this up!

Son of a... does that push more money into later years?

This is the system Dallas has had in place for years, so I'm not sure why it would be a surprise. The Cowboys will keep restructuring and pushing money around because that's how you manipulate this system unless you can constantly replenish your roster with young, cheaper talent or cheap vets.

Guess the Ware situation is next on the check list

Yep.

Ware is to the defense what Romo is to the offense.

Next up.

I'm wondering if Hatcher is now going to be affordable with some sort of deal?

And Spencer?

If it is..

that might change the draft priorities big time.

I'm aware of that, but it doesn't always make sense long-term. I really don't want to be stuck with Romo in five years because we kept pushing money further and further into the future, and can't afford to get rid of him.

It shouldn't, but it probably will.

That is my big fear right now. A "do-over" of what they thought they had last year. Hatcher returns with a contract that can be borrowed against, cross the fingers on Spencer with a one year deal. Adding in the havoc to be unleashed on the NFL in Crawford/Bass duo and we are "set" on the DL.

Jerry did this because he thinks we are close. Just one or 2 more players and we are golden! All he does is kick the can down the road year after year. He is an ego maniac who will not listen to anyone. This is why we have sucked for so long.

What do you think teams do? They are constantly fighting the cap and trying to improve their team. You have a franchise QB. You ride him into the sunset.

Someone explain how this is so?

Because the Romo contract has now been next to impossible to trade him without even more significant penalties than before. It also increases the likelihood that since he will be counting for more, they want him playing.

Please give up the dreams of Manziel. It is a wasted effort.

No, he does this because this is the business model they have adopted. It allows them to basically spend 150% of the cap number in real dollars each year. They feel that it is a competitive advantage and with the cap always increasing and dead money/large contracts coming off the books every year, they feel they can manage it and won't get into big trouble. The problem is not with the way they work the cap. The team has been talented enough since Romo became the starter to have had much greater success. The problem is with the culture in the lockeroom. The team is leaderless with no will to win. Players in Dallas are playing for their next contract, not for a ring. It doesn't matter who they sign or draft, they will eventually fall prey to the negative culture surrounding the team.

People get too carried away with this salary cap thing. It's really not a big deal.

I'm sure Dallas like most teams liked Andrew Luck guess what we did not get him either. manziel is not going to be a Cowboy and all the little story lines of how he was born during halftime of a Cowboys game? so what. Cowboys believe in Romo and like any team if you believe in your QB you step up to the plate. Romo contract is not out of line with other francise QB in the league.

Yes and no, teams who are well under the cap will be able to go after top FA more so than teams who are currently over or right up aginst it. I'm sure Dallas will make moves in FA but highly doubt any big name FA will be part of it.

Romo was impossible to trade before this little restructure whether ya'll want to acknowledge it or not...

Oh well, no Super Bowl for this team as long as this guy is QB

They won't be stuck with him in five years. The contracts are written specifically for this purpose. They already know when they will restructure and what that will make future cap hits. They also know which year they will be able to cut him and save cap space or at least beak even. The contract is written in such a way that that year coincides with their best guess at how long he will be a viable starter. Even with restructuring every year, he will probably reach that break even point in 3 or 4 years and they will be able to cut him without taking a big additional cap hit.
