Bill Polian: 18-game season done deal

Bill Polian says the 18-game NFL season is a done deal according to the Associated Press.

During Monday night's weekly radio show, the Indianapolis Colts team president called it a "fait accompli" and said the debate is over. Polian is a member of the league's competition committee and has worked in the league office.

He's concerned that getting rid of two preseason games to expand the regular season from 16 to 18 games will cost coaches and team officials opportunities to evaluate rookies. The solution, Polian says, might be hooking up with nearby teams for combined practices or controlled scrimmages.

Not gonna lie. I think it's a bad idea. We can't even get through week 3 without a lot of injuries. I know injuries are part of the game but I just think it's asking a lot from these guys to add more games to the season. Will there be added bye weeks? I think there should be. Each team gets two byes a season. Okay that last one was for personal reasons because it seems the Cowboys get a lot of early byes, lol.
 
Question is. How many pre-season games? Will they cut pre-season down 2 games or at all?
 
From what the article is saying (and I only skimmed it) they will cut preseason down to 2 games.
Forcing teams to hold scrimmages, with neighboring teams, to evaluate rookie talent.
 
Ok we have a lot of teams blacking out games attendance is down 3rd straight year. A lot of fans hate the idea yea I can see this back firing and the teams losing money. Family's already can not afford to go to games are those same people that do not goto games now going to go to them now ?

How long before more injuries and more players that should never be in the NFL waters the product down more before they hurt the ratings.

Gonna be awful in terms of injuries unless they come with 2 bye weeks.

Also, there really needs to be safer head protection equipment designed before exposing these guys to even more contact in such a violent sport.

Are they gonna prorate everyone's contracts for two additional games?

Doesn't seem to player-friendly overall to me.
 
Its sad that because of the 18 game schedule great records like 2000 yards rushing are going to become common place.

Guess I just don't like to be sold something under false pretense.

The league wants us to believe that they care about the competitiveness of the games. The force divisional match-ups during the last week of the season to shows us that they care about the level of competitiveness. They say they are trying like hell to prevent teams from squatting during that last week.

But, here they go getting ready to give teams another two weeks to separate themselves from the rest of their division. If you're in a division with only 1 good team, it's only going to widen the gap and you might have teams resting plays for multiple games or at the very least, playing a few snaps and then taking the rest of the game off.

The league tells us they want to protect players. Concussions are such a big deal to the league. However, I find it really odd that teams knowingly put players on the field when that player has a concussion. The Eagles did it week 1 with one of their linebackers. He took a header and went face first down into the ground trying to walk to the sideline, IIRC. Yet, there he was a few plays later back on the field. It wasn't until halftime that it was reported he was out for the remainder of the game because of a concussion.

I'll admit, I don't follow Philly football anymore than I have to but I haven't heard a single word about coaches/owners/trainers and team personnel being fined or penalized for knowingly putting a player back on the field in such a situation.

And of course, the league finds a way to ban nearly every sort of hit they can. Can't go low at a QB because Tom Brady was hurt. Carson Palmer got nailed in the knees but I guess he isn't a big enough name to warrant a protective rule.

And the horse-collar tackle gets outlawed after TO gets sidelined for it. I guess the other half dozen or so players that were hurt by Roy Williams alone weren't worth the trouble of voting on the new rule.

But these issues aren't the real problem. While it's incredibly sloppy to create rules only in certain situations that involve a star player, that's not my main issue with the rule creation.

My main issue is that they create these rules under the guise of protecting players. Gotta get rid of the wedge on special teams because it's just too much of a high impact play. Can't lay into a receiver who is "defenseless" even if the guy is going after the ball in some cases.

They make all these rules to protect to the players and then they contradict the supposed purpose of these rules by subjecting the players to an additional 2 games? You wanna decrease the chance of injury and yet you want to increase the amount of playing time for these guys by 12%?

Am I the only person who this isn't adding up for?

And don't even try to say that this is a move for the fans. I doubt any fan really cares to watch additional weeks of football if those weeks are believed to be watered-down, injury plagued and meaningless for the teams involved.

As it is, Jacksonville can't even sell out all their games in the first month. Does anyone here think attendance will increase in weeks 18 and 19?

Something tells me DirecTV won't be onboard with any sort of "fan movement" by keeping the price of Sunday Ticket a constant.

This move is a money-grab, plain and simple. The league doesn't care about injuries, competitiveness or the fans.

The owners don't give two squirts what is on the field as long as the money is coming in. Pretty pathetic to disguise it as something it's not.

But I gotta hand it to 'em. The timing of this couldn't be better. The new CBA is undoubtedly going to have a rookie scale and the owners are going to get to hoard more money.

this is the thing that really bothers me.. all the records that mean something right now (Eric Dickerson's incredible rushing season, the single season TD records, etc) will all be broken soon.. and it will feel so stupid when it happens.. and what about all-time career records? will it hurt Emmitt's rushing record? i was starting to think it was untouchable, but giving an RB 2 extra games over a 12-13 year career definitely stacks the odds in that guy's favor.. i hate that..

the one bright side is that we could see Demarcus break that single season sack record sooner than later.. (this one i won't feel bad about, because Strahan shouldn't hold that record anyways.. Gastineau got robbed..)

It wouldn't mean a darn thing if the players don't approve it.
 
Couldn't be happier about this. Everybody's worried about a bunch of stuff that's never going to happen. Revenues will continue to go up, and the league will continue to prosper, of course.

I don't necessarily agree. Yes, getting rid of 2 pre-season games makes absolute sense but, but for the right reasons, ie: cutting down on the length of the season while at the same time saving serious wear and tear on the players.

Howie Long said it perfectly this past Sunday in the Fox pre-game show. I agree with him 100%. He also should have added this:

with 18 games, the owners have just cut a player's career by at least 1/3rd of the time length. Yes, there will be more players added to the roster, yes there will be an extra bye week added to the season, but the star players we root for are going to have shorter careers because of it because no coach in his right mind is going to sit those players in those 2 extra games the way they sit them in pre-season right now.

So instead of enjoying watching DeMarcus Ware rack up sacks until he's about 35, 36 years old, for the Cowboys now he'll probably be done by 32, 33 years old. QBs last longer because they're protected, but now Dez Bryant career as a Cowboy might be 8 years as opposed to 10 or 11, or even 12. Linebackers ? I'm putting the over/under at 7 years. DLinemen ? 8 years. DB's ? 6 years. And I'm only talking about the superstars, not the regular middle class player.

I'm not naive in thinking that it's been otherwise ( to a certain extent only ) but the 18 game schedule will be the official point in time in which players became nothing more than beef cattle ( granted, highly compensated cows ) used for the entertainment purposes of the public, and a revenue generating tool for owners. Build them up, use them up, and dispose of them like we do our cars and right around the same time frame, roughly every 7 years.

I don't understand where the concern all comes from. It's two games, offset by two fewer preseason games. It's not going to take a third off of players' careers. That's just silly.

And it's not like there's a shortage of players. And it's not like we're attached to anyone any longer than the length of time they're on our active rosters right now, anyway. Just look at how people on CZ view Troy Aikman if you need any proof of that.

The league is going to benefit from this. Contracts will be adjusted, and players are going to benefit from this. It might well also be instrumental in preventing a possible play stoppage. It's a win all around, and one that's had precedents in the switches from 12 and 14 game seasons already. It's the Y2K bug all over again, only we get another half-month of football out of the deal. Win.
 
Will they expand the 53-man rosters too? Inevitably someone - maybe even a star or two - will get hurt.
 
Wouldn't be surprised if another bye week gets proposed later. Would give TV contracts 20 weeks of regular season and the players another week of rest in a long season.

Life is better when football season is around, so I'm all for it.
