The issue starts with Zimmer trying to make his system fit the players. Zimmer uses bigger lineman. His first mistake was having Micah play edge.

Everything starts there. If Kneeland played Edge and Micah plays LB with Kendricks, You’d see an uptick in run defense.

Instead you have 240lb player in Micah trying to set an edge. And now without him you have a more traditional lineup that Zim would prefer but it’s a bunch of 3rd and 4th stringers which creates a whole new set of problems.

Also the talent on the line is bad. You can’t fix that. Mazi Smith is in a scheme he should thrive in and he still sucks.

This right here. I think most knew this team lacked the players to run his style of D, but what I didn’t expect was this defense to be as undisciplined as it’s been. We’ve now had 2 DC’s with the same issue. At some point it’s the players and the culture that are a bigger issue. The poster you’re quoting also assumes that Micah would actually play off the ball and be a run defender he won’t. It’s not what he wants to do and his play when asked reflects that.

At this point, you only trade Martin for an agreement to go chase a ring.

The return pick wont be great and the cap space is pretty much nothing.

In Zimmers scheme Micah is supposed to be like Prime Anthony Barr on steroids. Stuff the run, rush the passer, drop in middle zones occasionally.

If run correctly Micah as LB should have 7-8 sacks, 80 tackles, maybe 1-2 INTs.

What Zim was supposed to have is Kneeland , Sam W and DLaw on the edge. And since Jones don’t spend money it was supposed to OSA, Mazi, Linval, Phillips. All 4 guys on the line we’re supposed to hold up blocks allowing Micah, Overshown , Kendrick’s to run free and tackle the runner.

Once that’s done, teams will get out of the 21 personnel and more 11 personnel. Then Micah can rush from inside and outside and with Zimmers AA gap package he would get 1 on 1s. But he knows better than a guy coaching for 30 years
