STEELERS EXTEND BEN
Posted by Mike Florio on March 3, 2008, 8:26 a.m.

With some of the money that could have gone to keeping left guard Alan Faneca on the team, the Steelers have extended the contract of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.
That is not entirely true. Faneca wanted out of Putzburgh.

I think he just wanted the most money he could get and the Steelers weren't going to give it to him.

It pains me to say this, because I hate anything black & gold, but BR is getting better each year.

I was on the "overrated" band wagon all along, but he is really starting to impress me with the plays he makes.

I love me some Romo, but like WG says, it would not hurt my feelings if we had BR, .. if we didn't have Tony.

Agree that Benny was really overpaid but the price of a decent QB has skyrocketed. Some experts believe that Romo could have set a new level of pay for QBs but for whatever reason didn't. Conjecture is that he either gave the Cowboys a nice discount (Romo never contemplated leaving the Cowboys) or wasn't demanding enough in pushing for more money.

It just makes the deal that Romo got all the more palatable. Ben is a good QB, but Pittsburgh is one motorcycle away from doom with that 8 year deal.

Overpay???? He's lead them to a Superbowl win dude and he's younger than Romo, that's a fair deal. How much guaranteed is the question...

I thought they won a SB in spite of that fraud and because the laundry came out flying everytime the Seahawks got close.

Agree with all of that.

But I still don't think hes worth 100 mill.

IMO, there are very few athletes worth 100 million, but that's the cost of doing business these days.

that's like saying trent dilfer led the ravens to the superbowl. take a look at ben's rating in the SB. he is an average QB not a star.

Romo got around 30mm of guranteed, not 8mm.
Big Ben's 37-38mm of guranteed is about right. He has won some playoff games and gotten to the SB.
So I don't see this as overpay -- its market.

True its market. Still over paid. Brady, Manning are the only ones worth that kind of money.

I don't know about "leading" them Three. He played solid especially for a rookie but we all know that he was a system QB and that Super Bowl team was a running team. I think it would be more fair to say the defense and running game "lead" them to a Super Bowl more than the QB.

Now in regards to Romo, Ben was never the focal point of his offense until this year. Romo had the responsibility of being the focal point from his first day starting and his numbers and attempts support my beliefs.

Ben is a good QB but his upside to me is less than that of Romo's and not to mention that Romo was rated above him just about all year.

You could say the same thing about Joe Montana ;)

Then all QBs are system QBs.

That is the point. To say that Ben won a Super Bowl just because of the "system" is as silly as saying it about Montana or Aikman. Although he had a sub-par performance in SB XL, the Steelers would never have made it to the big game without Ben. Pittsburgh will see a few more Super Bowl trips with him. Ben is a really good QB and the Steelers are fortunate to have him.;)

He'd not a top 5 qb. I dont think ANYBODY will argue that he is. So it is questionable to see this deal.

If brady signed it we wouldnt question it.
