Back to the message boards. I almost started down the road to setting up a registered “account” so I could start mosh-pitting with the Commander masses.
Then… I read the “Rules and Regulations” page.
Holy gawd! Are you kidding me?
I had to print it out first, take a nap, and then re-read it all to make sure I wasn’t dreaming. Then I called my attorney, just to make sure I couldn’t be actually incarcerated for violating any message board policies.
This passage was especially chilling..
“When a member violates a rule, the ES Staff will make an effort to contact them, via Private Message and/or e-mail, to address the issue privately. Each violation carries its own set of penalties; some more serious than others. Duplicate accounts are prohibited, and the staff employs security measures to enforce this policy.”
Does Extreme Skins have it’s own police force? Paramilitary? Private eyes? Will they search my trash if I violate a policy? How strident can I be in critiquing the team. If I legitimately think the owner is suffocating the process of winning football games by way of his ego, isn’t that fair comment?
In sum, I do think there are plenty of thoughtful, rational Commanders fans who participate at Extreme Skins, and make some good points. But when you live under the reign specter of “penalties, some more seriously than others” how open and free of a sports dialogue can you have?
