There was something wrong with Free that no one was talking about. I suspect he had some confidence and focus issues that are better now. Perhaps he worked with a sports psychologist or is on medicine to improve his attention. Whatever it was is better now. He's is showing up big time.

Of course it helps that Tyron can play on an island all day so Free gets all the help but still. Great job so far.

Good for Free. Hope he keeps it up. His play right now is as much of a steal as last year's was a robbery.

Side note.

I've begun to wonder who does their grading. It's obviously got to be a team of people doing it to grade every single player in the NFL in less than 24 hours. I myself have tried to focus on individual players and it's tough. It takes times.

Have they ever addressed who does their grading? I could probably check the site but it's not that big of a deal.

Anyway, I think it's likely they have people who volunteer to do the stuff. It wouldn't shock me if they have a couple people per team, each grading different aspects.

I think that site suffers from poor inter-rater reliability. I really do because some scores I've seen just do not make sense.

Like Peyton Manning and Caron Palmer's Week 1 passing grade.

Passing grade for Manning was 4.5 and passing grade for Carson Palmer was a 5.5

Here's a little chart I thew together for some single game scores threw 3 weeks. I have no explanation for these scores because they don't make sense at all. I've checked and re-checked some of the ones that are almost too far out there to even look half-right.

It's unbelievable how varied the scores are between players with similar games, between games with similar stats from the same player, and differing games between the same player and between other players.

Look at Alex Smith's Week 1 and Week 2 scores. He throws 2 more incompletions but has 50 more yards and the same amount of TDs. His grade falls through the floor?

Look at Stafford's week 1 and week 3. They are almost identical but the grade difference is equal to one of the top overall grades they have handed out thus far?

What on Earth is going on with Brandon Weeden? I swear I have checked his grade about a dozen times because I can't believe it and I'm not trying to make myself look like an idiot by posting the wrong value. I've done that for all of them. They're entirely unbelievable.

I don't get it. The more you actually look at their stuff the more it really just starts to fall apart and looks more and more like someone plugs the numbers in and tinkers with variables in the formula to get the result they want.

Is there something I'm missing? Do they outline why there would be such a difference?

You're right about their grades which is why I take them with a grain of salt.

But you're wrong about Free.

Wrong about what? He sucked last year and wasn't earning close to his cap amount.

This year he's likely outperforming his cap amount. Hats off to him.

I don't care if it was the pay cut or the rotation at ROT at the end of last year but something got up his rear and he is finally playing like he did 3 years ago. Let's face it, he keeps this up and we won't need to pick up a OT high next April.

I've been saying we shouldn't give up on him. He's definitely not the best tackle in the league but he is having a good year thus far.

I'm thrilled with Free's improvement, but I have to point out that he became terrible after signing a 4 year $32 Million contract in 2011 ($17 Million guaranteed). So I'm glad he turned it around, but I'm a little hesitant to praise him for his hard work and determination. Only this year of his new two year contract is guaranteed, so he's basically in a contract year and playing accordingly.

Did not start to play better until he got benched and was losing his starting position

Did not seem to 'get it' until a pay cut

Fell off the cliff for no discernable reason

then recovered the same way

No way can you trust him

and PFF is about as valid as the Flat World Society

I like PFF because they have some stuff you can't find anywhere else. Snap counts are one things I like that they have.

That said, I'd like to hear their take on how they grade QBs and why there's so much variance.

Here is my take on the QB scoring:

PFF watches and grades each and every play that a QB makes. I think that they make a great deal of subjective judgements on each play that go a long way in determining the QBs scores. For example I remember on opening night, near the end of the game, manning threw a two yard pass to Demetrius who then took it almost 70 yards for a TD. The stats say that it was a 70 yard TD pass by manning but I have a feeling that PFF found it to be worth a lot less under their subjective scoring system. They might even grade it less than a play where a QB evaded pressure and made a 8 yard pass into tight coverage for a first down. I admire their effort to grade every player on every down but I do have my doubts about Thier scoring quite a bit......
