Perspective on Taco Charlton

Not to derail the thread but am I the only one shocked to see RB @ the bottom of the list. Obviously, we were extremely spoiled last year but I always remember drafting stud rookie RB's in past fantasy seasons. And those studs always performed. Tomlinson, Faulk (I'm dating myself here...lol), Doug Martin, A-Train, Fred Taylor, Jones-Drew, Portis, James, etc. Obviously, I'm looking at this through a fantasy perspective but shocking to me nonetheless.

I think there is a pic (possibly still on DC.com) that shows one of Taco's biggest issues - core strength. He's leaving the practice field with his shirt off. To be 6'6", 272, he has absolutely NO DEFINITION WHATSOEVER in his upper body. Hell, my 14-year-old (who just started lifting weights like 4 months ago) has more definition that he does. He DEFINITIELY needs upper body work in the weight room.

What we may have in Taco, and any other players, will be the combination of players, not any one player by himself. Maybe someone emerges as a top player, therefore making another player more effective in that combination.

I am looking at the team success on the defense as opposed to one individual at this time. Let the rotation be that factor, as opposed to having one single war daddy. However, that war daddy could emerge or could be waiting to get to 100% later on in the year.

This will be interesting to watch and see this very young D grow and get better. In the meanwhile, the O will be keeping us rolling along.

It has been very interesting to see the overreaction to what people saw out of Taco Charlton in the first preseason game this year. I thought it would be interesting to see historically what teams have gotten with the 28th pick in the first round in teams rookie seasons. I'll let the stats speak for themselves:

1997 DEN – Trevor Pryce DT Clemson – started 3 games, 2 sacks

1998 SF – R.W. McQuarters CB Oklahoma State – started 7 games, had 2 fumble recoveries, no INTs

1999 NE – Andy Katzenmoyer LB Ohio State – started 11 games, had 3.5 sacks, 1 INT.

2000 IND – Rob Morris LB Brigham Young – started 0 games, had 8 tackles.

2001 OAK – Derrick Gibson SS Florida State – started 0 games, had 1 INT.

2002 SEA – Jerramy Stevens TE Washington – started 1 game, had 26 catches for 252 yards and 3 TDs.

2003 TEN – Andre Woolfolk CB Oklahoma – started 2 games, had 1 INT.

2004 CAR – Chris Gamble CB Ohio State – started 16 games, had 6 INT and 15 PD.

2005 SD – Luis Castillo 5T Northwestern – started 15 games, had 3.5 sacks and 1 FF.

2006 JAX – Marcedes Lewis TE UCLA – started 3 games, had 13 catches for 126 yards and 1 TD.

2007 SF – Joe Staley OT Central Michigan – started 16 games at RT for an offense that was 32nd in yards and points scored.

2008 SEA – Lawrence Jackson DE USC – started 14 games, had 2 sacks.

2009 BUF – Eric Wood C Louisville – started 10 games at RG for an offense that was 30th in yards and 28th in points scored.

2010 MIA – Jared Odrick DE Penn State – started 1 game and had 0 sacks, 1 tackle.

2011 NO – Mark Ingram RB Alabama – started 4 games, rushed 122 times for 474 yards and 5 TDs.

2012 GB – Nick Perry DE/LB USC – started 5 games, had 2 sacks.

2013 DEN – Sylvester Williams DT North Carolina – started 4 games, had 2 sacks, 1 FR.

2014 CAR – Kelvin Benjamin WR Florida State – started 15 games, had 73 catches for 1008 yards and 9 TDs.

2015 DET – Laken Tomlinson OG Duke – started 14 games for an offense that was 20th in yards and 18th in points scored.

2016 SF – Joshua Garnett OG Stanford – started 11 games for an offense that was 31st in yards and 27th in points scored.

I bolded what could be considered productive to highly productive seasons. The average player taken 28th started only 7.6 games in their rookie season. The majority were not especially productive.

Keep this in mind when evaluating Charlton's preseason performance and rookie season.

Comparing position, not draft placement, both JPP and Greg Hardy had zero starts as rookies.

There is a difference in definition and muscle mass.

A 14 old with no body fat might look defined despite no muscle mass.

My Girlfriends 14 year old son thought he had a "12 pack" as he called it.

Turns out it was just his ribs.

Makes me question the accuracy of the data.

History tells us that DEs in their rookie seasons can't be counted upon for productivity. It's just contrary to the evidence to think otherwise. I have no problem waiting a year or two to see what the necessary time to develop physically and technique-wise might do.
I think the problem for Taco and the rest of the DL..

is that everybody wants another DeMarcus Ware.

Not going to happen.

Taco needs more help from the rest of the defense to show improvement.

Interesting, lol. To expand upon your thoughts, I've seen pics of Taco about the time when he finished college and his musculature actually appeared more impressive than it has in his recent pics. I can't help but consider that it's possible that our conditioning coaches have deemed it desirable to divest him of his extra bulk and rebuild him into a player with more muscle mass and less soft bulk. Just offering food for thought. I think that he's lost weight lately as evidence of the possibility that his body is in a transitional process to rebuilt it.

I think there are some who might well fall into that category. It surely wouldn't hurt for him to enjoy more company, as far as having teammates capable of delivering additional pressure to augment whatever pressure he can muster. I'm sure the conditioning coaches will do what they can to strengthen him, along with the positional coaches who will work to improve his knowledge and technique. It'll just take time -- exactly how much of it remains to be seen. It won't happen overnight, that seems fair to say.

Perspective and rational thinking on CZ as it relates to our first of five pre-season games? BAN THIS OUTCAST!!! The Taco Charlton sucks but "I hope I'm wrong" crowd will not stand for this.

I didnt hear many overreactions. what I heard were realistic analysis of his ho hum performance. Those are just the facts. But on the other side of the coin, anyone that thought this kid was going to knock the cover off the ball was kidding themselves. He is a rookie. Cant expect much out of a rookie defender.

Nice work and bonus points for not attempting a Taco pun in the title.

right, we may have no idea what we have in taco for quite a while.
same with tapper who would hopefully stay healthy.

Exactly...........so the fans that keep talking about how our pass rush is going to be miraculously much better this year are dreaming. Based on reality, tapper and Taco wont do much. Irvin, our best hope is suspended. Our biggest hope is that Lawrence is a contract year and can stay healthy. But then he probably wont be back anyway.

Good points.

We have had to wait for all of our high drsft picks on the DL.

No one has really done more than flash at times.

With our new secondary..

Marinelli has lots to worry about.

Yeah, I'm not surprised in the least. It's always been tougher finding an impact DE, more so than an impact LB. The bigger size required of DEs naturally makes it so. Thing is, we already have Taco Charlton in house to develop, so wishing for TJ Watt instead is a bit too late at this point. Is that what you had in mind, perchance?

I don't think it's "too late" for some of us who were wishing for him before the draft.

For as much patience as I'm willing to have for Taco, it's going to be tested if Watt is tearing it up in Pittsburgh.

Thanks for taking the time to compile this list. It's pretty eye-opening. So much for the expectation of impact from a 28th overall pick. If anything, we should be expecting the opposite.
