"The big question mark is La’el Collins moving to right tackle. Tackle was his more natural college position, but his below-average performance at guard isn’t too encouraging." -- Michael "Socially Challenged" Renner

FWIW, I wonder if Renner is an Eagles fan. He seems to overrate the Eagles quite a bit.

Well now...

You should have questioned PFF's validity after they ranked our secondary #1 last year. This only confirms their ineptitude.

The Bears... heh

TBH, only team I could see above us, as a 5 man group would be the Titans.
I think that line will be among the elite soon.

But to have the Cowboys at 9 is silly. #1LT/C/RG and a promising guy in Collins currently at RT.
A potato sack can be between Smith and Frederick and still get positive grade marks.

I just enjoy the fact that some Eagles fan is going to try and stick this to a Cowboys fan he knows, without realizing how damaging it is to the entire "Dak is only good because of his supporting cast" narrative. Oh yeah, how come Wentz didn't ball out like Dak if his oline is so good? Which is it?

just another example of how worthless PFF is. And some people actually PAY for it.

Some of the counting stats are worthwhile like hits and pressures or QB misses and WR drops. Those are straightforward and have a real analog that is easy to see.

Their grading system is very similar to psychological testing where they ask you how you feel about something graded from strongly agree to somewhat agree and whatnot. In their case they have a scale from -3 to 3 and they attribute an integer value to how they feel a player performed in a particular play. Then they just add all the scores for all the plays.

It would be quite useful in telling how one particular individual felt about a player if they had one person grade the entirety of a player's season. Instead it's a hodgepodge of how an unknown number of people feel about a player's performance. As for real evaluation it's completely subjective garbage either way.

The DB scoring system is crap. They attribute the closest defender to a catch. In man to man that is not too bad but as much zone is played particularly underneath it is worthless. For example if you are passing off a receiver to someone and that person blows the coverage and covers the wrong guy, if a completion is made and the initial zone DB is closest they are credited for the completion although they executed their assignment correctly. It rewards bad zone coverage.

I don't throw the baby out with the bathwater but a lot of PFF is modelled poorly to say the least. You don't just gloss over ignorance and fake it.

I don't think these are Renners rankings at all. He is just taking the historical grades of each teams projected starting 5, and adding them up. These are completely objective rankings where a team like the Cowboys suffer from unknown commodities at LG & RT. Meanwhile a team like the Eagles get the benefit of it not factoring in that they have two starters in their mid 30s and likely to face a decline.
