49ERS HIRE MIKE MARTZ by Michael David Smith

Adam Schefter of NFL Network is reporting that the San Francisco 49ers have hired Mike Martz as their new offensive coordinator.

Martz replaces Jim Hostler, who had one disastrous year as the 49ers' offensive coordinator. Martz spent the last two years as the offensive coordinator in Detroit, and seven years before that in St. Louis, first as offensive coordinator and then as head coach.

Martz will now be tasked with the difficult job of making Alex Smith look like the franchise quarterback the 49ers thought he was when they chose him with the first pick in the 2005 NFL draft. This season Smith was limited by injury to just seven games, and he had a completion percentage of 48.7 percent, with two touchdowns and four interceptions.

This development makes agent Bob LaMont a powerful figure in San Francisco: LaMont represents Martz, head coach Mike Nolan and assistant head coach-defense Mike Singletary.

Smith couldn't stay healthy this year. He is going to get pummeled in a Martz "don't protect the QB" system.

Guess who will be leading the league in sacks allowed and turnovers next year?

But you might want to draft whoever SF's midget slot WR is next year in your FF leagues in the later rounds.

Seems like a terrible fit to me.

A team whose line is built for a power runing game hiring 'Mr. Pass-Happy?'

A team with no receivers hiring a guy who'd trot 6 out there if he could?

Recipe for disaster in my opinion.

This will probably inspire Larry Allen to retire or join another team. Maybe Miami. :D

I would actually like to see him sign a one year deal with us and retire a cowboy. At the very least I hope to see him sign one of those one day contracts.

Mike Nolan = lame duck in 2008

Yep. I wonder if Nolan was ok w/ this pick as OC or did the org. force Martz on him.

This is what I don't understand. This guy Martz has been fired a couple of times already but still lands on his feet to be someones OC.

Personally, I think this is a very good move for them...Martz clearly has a good track record with getting offenses going...Still, the Niners have suffered from an OC turnover for nearly 4 straight years now...That can't be good for a club let alone a fragile and developing QB in Alex Smith (Who looks like he's going the Leaf route, IMHO).

King might be their heir apparent and who better to get the most out of him than Martz.

Good move for them

I've read that Larry Allen is definitely planning to retire, even tho the coaching staff really wants him to come back.

Jerry needs to do the one day contract thing so he goes out as a Cowboy

Not sure this is the best hire for a young QB with shaky confidence. Might see the resurgence of Trent Dilfer though.

Man that's a bad hire... Martz is a joke, doesn't protect the QB and abandons the running game too much. I bet Frank Gore will ready to leave San Fran in 1 year.

Didn't our old buddy David Lee become QB coach of the Dolphins today too?

How can Dilfer have a resurgence? He was never really that good to begin with during his career.
