Several readers have pointed out to us a fairly recent item in the East Bay Express, in which Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman is outed (not in that way . . . not that there’s anything wrong with it) as a part owner of the Oakland Raiders.

Here’s the money quote from the September 3 article: “Davis was apparently so hard up for cash ten months ago that he sold a 20 percent stake in the team to some silent partners, reportedly including former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman, according to County Supervisor Scott Haggerty, who sits on the Coliseum Joint Powers Authority.”

Regardless of whether Aikman is or isn’t a minority owner in the team, there’s strengthening talk in league circles that some of the minority owners have begun the process of determining whether and to what extent they can bounce Davis out of the captain’s chair.

The rights will be determined by the operating agreement. And if Davis is as shrewd as he has always seemed to be, our guess is that there’s really nothing anyone can do to wrest control of the team from him.

Why would Aikman want to be part owner of the raiders? Working side by side with Al Davis isn't exactly a picnic. I'd rather be part owner of the lions or cardinals.

Interesting. He will never have enough money to completely own a team, but more power to him. Al Davis out of the league would be a good thing.

If he's a silent partner as the article states, he wouldn't be involved in any day to day work with Davis. My question is: If this is true, does it jeopardize Troy's broadcasting career? Or would he just be prevented from calling any Raiders games? Come to think of it, maybe he purchased an interest in the team just so he wouldn't have to call any Raiders games.:p:

If Aikman is a minority owner then the concussions took more of a toll than I thought.
I mean, dudes, aren't there worthier teams out there he'd be willing to invest in?
geez, such a bizarre story.

Al Davis isn't long for this world and it was probably the cheapest way he could get a foot in the door of owing a team. Think about it. Al Davis dies and someone has to take over. Maybe Aikman has asperations of owning and running a team. If he is already a minority owner, it should be easy for him to put together a group of investors to buy the team and let him run it. The Raiders may suck now but teams go in cycles. When a team comes available and you want to be an owner, you have to look past the current condition of the organization and have the confidence that you can turn it around.

It's possible that Aikman might have an interest in owning an NFL franchise but he's got nowhere near that kind of money. It takes somebody much closer to billionaire status now a days. I also believe Davis established in the by-laws some time ago that buying shares in the Raiders doesn't come with any voting rights. Now, should Davis go completely bowkers or die, I could easily see Aikman being able to pull many of the minority partners together (depending on how much stock they own together) to influence who gets majority ownership of the Raiders. Aikman's name will go a long way in helping him pull everything together & assure the new ownership gets NFL approval. He & Jerry would be on the phone a lot. I really doubt Aikman wants to run the Raiders, but if he does, he'll bring in a well respected GM who'll be in charge in actually running the Raiders, drafting, etc but Aikman might retain financial control of the team on behalf of his co-owners. Hmm. Won't Parcells be finished with the Dolphins in about 4 years?

Aikman won't be on the Ring of Honor at the new stadium if he is owner of Raiders. That is, unless he agrees to lose every game against the Cowboys.

On second thought, that wouldn't be too much of a thing to promise.

Cause the old man needs to eventually die and burn in hell. As a Raider fan i'm all for this. Go Aikman, hopefully we'll get to see shots of you in the owners box soon instead of that old man and his 80's prostitutes.

Not me. No History or value to their franchise. The day Al Davis kicks the bucket or puts the Raiders up for sale their value will go through the roof.

Didn't his Ford dealership on the west side of Ft. Worth go belly up?

I don't think that is possible. He would be ineligable to broadcast any Raiders games or any that would impact the Raiders.

I didn't think the networks allowed that. I could be wrong, but thought they discussed this on Sirius NFL radio a few months back. ( not about Akiman, but in general).

Minority silent partners.....hmmm, can someone own 2 teams? Might Jerry be the first? One afc one nfc? Doesn't Jerry always like to be first? Hard to pass up a huge bargain.
