BENGALS FINALLY GETTING THEIR FAT GUY?
Posted by Mike Florio on March 3, 2008, 9:30 a.m.

With a trade for defensive tackle Shaun Rogers imploding on Friday, the Bengals have filled the big spot Rogers would have occupied on the team’s defensive line.

Per Michael Smith of ESPN.com, the Bengals tentatively have agreed to a trade with the Jets for defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson.

The price tag is a fourth-round pick and a fifth-round pick, slightly less than the three and a five that that the Bengals would have sent to the Lions for Rogers.

Smith reports that the deal hinges on Robertson agreeing to a new contract. He currently is owed base salaries of $6.8 million in 2008 and $4.5 million in 2009.

Robertson was the fourth overall pick in the 2003 draft, and the Jets traded up with the Bears to get him. In return, the Bears got the 13th overall pick in 2003 (they selected defensive end Michael Haynes), the 21st pick in round one (Rex Grossman), and a fourth-round pick (defensive tackle Ian Scott).

Like linebacker Jonathan Vilma, who recently was traded to the Saints, Robertson didn’t fit the 3-4 defense installed by coach Eric Mangini in 2006. But, as some league insiders have asked us, why in the hell didn’t the Jets stick with a scheme that fit with their players?

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, a Tampa 2 disciple, didn’t pull the plug on the 3-4 in Pittsburgh in 2007. As a result, Pittsburgh won’t be giving away any of its high-profile defensive players.

Meanwhile, Robertson officially joins a crowded house of 2003 first-round busts among defensive tackles. In addition to Robertson, Jonathan Sullivan, Jimmy Kennedy, and William Joseph. The lone exception is Kevin Williams of the Vikings.

ROGERS REFUSED TO MOVE ROSTER BONUS FOR CINCY TRADE
Posted by Mike Florio on March 3, 2008, 9:30 a.m.

Tom Kowalski of Mlive.com has more info on the collapse of the deal that would have sent former Lions defensive tackle Shaun Rogers to Cincinnati. As it turns out, once the deal didn’t get finalized by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, the Bengals proposed refunding the Lions the $1 million roster bonus that the team was on the hook to pay as of midnight on Saturday.

But the league told the teams that there was no language in the CBA that applied to this kind of a maneuver.

Meanwhile, the problem could have been solved if Rogers had merely agreed to postpone the trigger on the million-dollar payment. As to the Bengals, Rogers wouldn’t do it. As to the Browns, he would.

It should make for some interesting signs and chants from the stands at Paul Brown Stadium when Rogers and the Browns go there next season.

And so, in the end, the Browns gave up a third-round pick, cornerback Leigh Bodden, and $1 million in cash and cap space.

One league source was surprised that the Browns gave up so much to get Rogers, who some league insiders (including our source) regard as a turd. The source also thinks that the Browns gave up too much by way of money and draft position to get defensive lineman Corey Williams from the Browns.

As we see it, the Browns are apparently going “all in” to try to pair with a strong offense a defense that can consistently hold the opponent under 30 points per game.

Pretty sure Parcells was enamored with this guy before the draft. Good thing he didn't fall to us that year.

He was. I am damn glad the Jets moved up and took him.
