Top 15 RBs have busted pretty frequently over the last 15 years.

1993:

#3 Garrison Hearst

#10 Jerome Bettis

No Busts there. And one Hall of Famer.

1994:

#2 Marshal Faulk

Hall of famer.

1995:

#1 Kijana Carter.

Big time Bust. Mainly due to injury.

1996:

#6 Lawrence Phillips

#8 Tim Biakabutuka

#14 Eddie George

Phillips had IMMENSE talent, but lacked a brain.

Biakabutuka was another injury bust.

George is a possible hall of famer.

1997:

#12 Warrick Dunn

Not a bust. Not even close.

1998:

#5 Curtis Enis

#9 Fred Taylor

Enis should change his last name to "Bust".

Taylor is far from a bust.

1999:

#4 Edgarrin James

#5 Ricky Williams

Neither one of them are busts. Williams like da' hash, but he's no bust.

2000:

#5 Jamaal Lewis

#7 Thomas Jones

#11 Ron Dayne

Lewis is not a bust. Jones was only a "Bust" while in Arizona, which is the norm for that team. Dayne has been ok, but still considered a bust.

2001:

#5 Ladanian Tomlinson

Hall of Famer and ARGUABLY the greatest RB of all time.

2002:

No RBs in the top 15.

2003:

No RBs in the top 15.

2004:

No RBs in the top 15.

2005:

#2 Ronnie Brown

#4 Cedric Benson

#5 Cadillac Williams

Brown is starting to look pretty good (before he got hurt). Benson is a bust. Williams was the best of the bunch, but injuries have hurt him.

Only one sure fire "Bust" out of that group. And to be fair, before that draft I stated several times that none of them were worth top 10 picks.

2006:

#2 Reggie Bush

Not a "Carry the load" type RB, but not a bust either. Not yet anyway.

2007:

#7 Adrian Peterson

#12 Marshawn Lynch

Too early to tell, but both has solid to great first seasons. AP is on his way to the HOF if he can stay healthy.

So, what were you saying about top 15 RBs being busts frequently over the last 15 years?

Out of 22 RBs drafted in the top 15 picks over the last 15 years (YOUR criteria) 5 of them are potential Hall of famers, another 8 were good to very good players, and only 5 of them could be flat out called "Busts".

That's 13 that are good to ALL TIME GREAT picks to only 5 busts. And another 4 that were either solid players or it's too early to tell.

What is the definition of bust? And even if a back is not a bust, they still may not provide the value that you would want out of a top 15 back. Not that I am talking about the list you provided. Your analysis seems right on although Garrison Hearst was not much of a factor for the team that draft him(the Cardinals again). It really was not until he was on his 3rd team did he become a good back. One season over 1333 yards. That is my line for a very good season based on 83.33 yards per game which is what it took for guys to gain a 1000 yards back in the old 12 game seasons. He was not a bust, but he was not what you would hope for drafting in the top 15.

I agree with Williams, Benson and Brown. All can be decent backs, but I never saw them as top 10 quality.

The reason I don't consider Hearst a bust is 1) he was drafted by the Cards and 2) he suffered a MAJOR horrific injury but came back and had a good year (two years later?). He was, IMO, at one point a top 5 RB in the NFL.

The same could be said for any position in the NFL.

Yeah, let's just spend first round picks on kickers and punters since they can play till they're 40.

Jimmy Johnson said he wouldn't last in the NFL. He made the comment in his rookie season, said he takes too much punishment.
