That sound you hear off in the distance is Jerry Jones’ head exploding.

Per Adam Schefter of NFLN, the Cowboys will be fined up to $200,000 for the suspension of Pacman Jones.

Specifically, the Cowboys will pay Pacman’s salary — $20,588 per game — to the league for each game of his suspension. The penalty applies even if the Cowboys release Jones.

Jones’ base salary for 2008 is $700,000. This translates to a rate of $41,176 per game, which means that the fine represents 50 percent of the pay Jones would have received but for the suspension.

The fine is the result of a previously unknown (at least by us) rule that became effective on August 1. For the first player suspended on a given team during a given league year, no fine applies. For the second player suspended, a portion of the player’s salary is paid as a fine.

The amount of the fine is capped at $200,000 to $500,000 per suspension.

The new fine procedure applies to suspensions under the Personal Conduct Policy, the substance-abuse policy, and the policy regarding anabolic steroids and related substances.

Because Cowboys receiver Mike Jefferson was suspended four games for violating the steroids policy, Jones’ suspension triggers the new policy.

It’s unclear whether this rule supersedes the provision effective as of June 1, which makes teams subject to fines for suspensions arising under the Personal Conduct Policy, presumably without regard to whether it was a team’s first or second suspended player of a given league year.

That just means Jerry has to skip his botox sessions this week.

Now that the Cowboys have been fined, does that mean Goodell will burn all of the Pacman evidence like he did the Belichick evidence? Just curious....

So Jerry gets to donate more to charity. The NFL seems to be hard up for cash these days. Talk about mismanagement.

So how much were the Patriots fined again?

It's Jerry's money, he knew the rule going in I guess but if Goodell is going to let him back in like he did why fine the team?

Because the team gave the guy another chance. I know Jerry did it to help his team but I also truly believe that Jerry thought he could get the guy to turn his life around too.

It is a cloudy message IMO. You reinstate the guy but then basically collude to have the player not picked up by a team because of the fear of the fine.

I don't like Pacman and did not want him on the team but I was hoping for the best for the guy. It is sad that he could not get it turned around.

I really hate Roger Goodell.

Is there any way we can impeach this hall monitor.

Bellicheck was given the maximum fine, $500000 I believe.
The patriots had to pay an additional $250,000 fine + their first round pick.

While I like the value of this type of fine, I still have a hard time in this case because of the fact that Goodell was the guy the reinstated the player in question. Jerry went out of his way to do the right thing here, and he still lost. No sense in compounding it IMO.

...but if it serves a lesson to the rest of the league, then its very much worth it.

I'm sure you'd already seen the answer below to this, but yeah, those were the numbers.

Ummm...nope. I believe he's in his position because the owners have him there (I'm really not sure what the process is for having a guy placed into that position) and if they didn't want him there, or thought he was a jerk like some fans, they'd have him removed.

Yep those were the terms. Bellicheck paid the maxium fine under the rules of the league that was set with help, and agreeance, from the NFLPA. They couldn't have fined him anymore money than they did.

I don't know how long they could have suspended him, if they'd done that, but given that it was his first time to be caught doing something I'd imagine it would be something like 4 games, like it is with roids and what not.

The team also paid the maximum amount of money at 250k and they lost a first round draft pick. It just so happens that they were quite lucky in the fact that they had 2 firsts, the one they got from San Fran in a trade during the previous draft, so that part of the deal really didn't hurt them as bad as it normally would have.

Good. This'll discourage teams from signing or drafting the jerks.
Agreed, but hopefully, it will also send a message to future, would-be players that not only will their own wallets take a hit, but their employers as well. Some players may get that message enough so as to second guess themselves before they decide to do something stupid. Others will not. Here's hoping that the former happens more often than the latter.

I would rather see it go to the American Cancer Society. Adding gurth to a rich man's wallet just doesn't cut it for me.

While Mr. Cuban and I are NOT friendly, I find it extremely classy that he donates the same amount that he gets fined to charity.

To some extent.

Looks like it takes a few instances to get to the fining.

I like it. Basically Pacman just donated 4 game checks. Bet that feels really nice.

Wonder if he can write that off?

Probably not.

This is crap, I bet this rule changes in the near future. This is nothing more than Goddel attempting to blackball players he does not like. I hope that Pacman sues Goddel personnally.
