PFT: Cowboys have begun talks with Osa

They could legit sign Javon Kinlaw, Poona Ford and Demarcus Walker for less than Osa. You get better productions at the 1T and 3T
It would surprise me if they don't make a strong play for Kinlaw......even with Osa signing.

In other words overpay Osa, Rico, Lewis, Lawrence, and sign a bunch of low level free agents or guys that once had a name but coming off big injury to one year deals. Then signing Parsons to the the largest deal for a defensive player in NFL history, thereby Solidifying a future of continued mediocrity.
THIS. Spot on.
The very definition of The Cowboys Way.

good article from Sturm about the Osa situation. Transition tag seems like a solid middleground.

Sounds good on the surface, but the issue with the transition tag is if you choose to not match another teams offer not only do you lose the player, but you also lose the comp pick he would have gotten you had he just walked in free agency.

Honestly I think the transition tag basically means that OSA is gone. There is a reason we have only seen the transition tag used 11 times this century. I dont think the Cowboys have ever used it. Just my suspicion but I dont think the Cowboys like to match contract terms, they much prefer to write the contract terms themselves. We sort of saw that from the Randy Gregory deal where minor verbiage was the difference in letting him walk.

They should've re-signed Osa last year for sure. Rico though, what has he proven? Spent a couple of years behind Zeke and Tony, flashed a couple of times, but nothing spectacular. He's a nice back to have in the stable, but I'm not convinced. He put up some decent numbers, had a surprisingly good second half of this year, but he isn't a threat. Defenses don't fear him breaking a big run. He didn't do much in the redzone. 2 rushing TDs vs 6 from Pollard the previous year and 12 from Zeke in 2022. In 2023 he had 89 Rushes, 361 yards, 2 TDs, 4.1ypc. He's a solid #2 back that can fill in as #1, but he isn't the game changer that this offense needs. I'd like to see him back next season but this FO is crazy if they give him starter money.
OSA looking at 4YR/80M+

We didnt have the cash last season.

Still don’t.

It's hard to get excited about signing a guy who should be a nice, complementary piece, but he's the best player on the unit.

I doubt Osa would of taken 16.5mil last year, nor would the Cowboys offered it.
Going into his contract year his advanced stats were very similar to this year. Pressures, pass rushing rates etc...
So, it's a risk of course, but he had no reason to sign a deal unless it was an overpayment.
I agree 100%. I'm getting tired of people saying "we should have signed this guy last year and saved money". What player is purposely signing early for less money ? Who ? These guys may not have PH.D's but they're not stupid. They have agents and family members who advise them to sit tight and wait to get max $$. It takes 2 to tango. I'm one of the worst Jones family critics but sometimes they aren't to blame in these contracts. Players simply want to wait.

Players sign a year early all the time. Sure some guys want to wait and roll the dice to maximize their value, but most of the time guys are not waiting until their walk year is over to reach an extension with a team. Just looking at the DT group of the top 5 paid at the position Quinnen Williams, Derrick Brown, and Slim McNeil all signed before their rookie deals were over.

This is such a Cowboys thing to do. Over pay for our own, average DT and RB when the draft is FULL of both and several solid, probably lower-priced FAs across the league.
Osa is one of the top free agents this year.

If the player plays a position that has a high floor and ceiling in terms of UFA money, there's no reason to sign early unless the team overpays. Especially when the player has some type of elite advanced stat or stats in general.
Osa going back to his 3rd year was seen as a very good pass rusher, even though the basic stats didn't show it. Why take 16.5mil when Chris Jones it out there resetting the market at over 30mil aav? 20's quickly become his goal.

One thing for a RB to want to get paid early, where they are almost a dime a dozen, but QB, DT, Edge, WR, corner etc... they know there's a market for them.
