DRAFT WILL STAY ON SATURDAY

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports that the NFL will reduce round one of the draft from 15 minutes per team to ten minutes, but that the move will not result in a shift (unfortunate typoe narrowly averted) of round one to Friday night.

Per Mort, the draft will start a bit later on Saturday than noon in the East.

Mort also says that round two will drop from ten minutes to seven, and that all other rounds will entail only five minutes, as the practice has been.

This is good, IMO. The only drawback I can see is that it reduces the wheeling and dealing time teams have to trade 1st and 2nd rd. picks.

Most of the teams know they are not going to trade though and they know who they are going to pick. They just drag it out and Berman yaps on and on and on.

I love this new rule.

15 minutes is just too damn long.

The most important piece of information is that the first round will not be moved to Friday night. That wouldn't have been good IMHO. I do like the shorter time for first round picks.

actually u might see more trades because teams will rush to make trade instead of seating on deal then turning it down

The first overall pick should be selected within 30 seconds of the draft starting. They've had over 3 months to plan for the pick for crying out loud.

YIPEEE!!! 10 minutes is PLENTY time to wheel & deal in round 1. Also, keeping it on Saturday is a MUST. There's nothing like it. Now, I only hope they keep the draft in NYC!!! Can't wait to be there next year.....

They may want to trade their pick. They need that time to entertain last minute offers.

I'm torn. I understand that each pick takes too long for a lot of people, and that there really isn't a need to give teams 15 minutes for one selection.

But, to be honest, I love the draft, and wouldn't mind if each selection was 20 minutes, much less 15. The draft is probably my favorite event of the year, and I sure don't mind sitting on my couch for a 6 hour period to enjoy it.

Again, not saying it's wrong or that I hate the change, I'll just miss the extra hour or so of football coverage during the sports drought that is march-june. If that makes any sense.

Just a difference of preference, but I dont see how you and others like the draft over football. Me personally, I love just sitting down and watching a good game of competitive football. Back and forth, back and forth. Listening to players names called and watching highlights of what they did in college, and what they can do in the pro's just isnt the same for me.

Now with that being said I still do love the draft.

Good -- 15 or 10 minutes doesn't matter because teams are going to use however much time you give them to work deals out. It isn't like these teams don't have the scenarios down to start with - they aren't scrambling when something happens, they know exactly what offers they can make (or what offers to expect) at each point in the draft and have likely already decided what they would do and what they wouldn't.

10 minutes?

Was that the sound of panic in Minnesota? LOL Let's hope the new clock doesn't confuse them as the longer clock did in the past

Smart move. It shortens the draft and keeps it on Saturday when more people will watch compared to Friday night.

As a fan, I love the fact that the "clock" has been shortened to 10 minutes for the first round. On the other hand, 10 minutes is not a lot of time to negotiate if you are trying to get a deal done. I would suspect that it probably won't limit the number of trades though.

I think teams that have a lot of draft day personnel and resources, like the Cowboys, Patriots, Commanders, will probably benefit from the rule a little bit. Also, since Jerry is the owner/GM the shortened time might favor us just a little, since that is one less step that information has to travel for certain trades, especially when that trade involves a player that is on the roster.

When a trade is made in today's NFL, you are not just evaluating the pros and cons of the talent acquired and lost, you have to also keep in mind the cap ramifications, etc, which have to be factored into the big scheme of things. I sometimes wonder if there would be more trades if the clock were a little longer in the later rounds as five minutes is not much time to negotiate, especially when there is more than one team trying to obtain a team's pick.

i wouldnt mind seeing the first 10 picks get the full 15 mins, and the rest of the first round get 10 mins. i do believe this new time limit will cut down trades. simply cause teams will not have enough time to work out details.

The Cowboys are a team that likes to make trades, hopefully this wouldnt affect us.:starspin

I'd say the first 5 picks (maybe even the first 7-10) should come pretty quickly. Unless there's a trade, you should be prepared for any number of situations before you.

Leading up to every draft, I'm always surprised by how many teams don't know who they want even weeks just before the draft. I mean it could all be a lie, but I remember an interview with one GM maybe 3 weeks before the draft and he said they hadn't put together their board yet.

I do remember Goddell saying they'd look at shortening the first round at least almost right after the draft, so this is no surprise. I think in the same interview he brought up moving the Pro Bowl to before the Super Bowl and I remember being dumbfounded that the idiot interviewing him didn't scream, "WHAT?! That's a stupid idea.", they just moved onto the next question.

The people who are going to benefit the most from this are those who actually attend.
