Juqua Parker busted for pot

Posted by Mike Florio on August 5, 2009 10:20 AM ET
In most years, the arrest rate involving NFL players drops dramatically during training camp, when teams have the highest level of regular access to the guys who might, when left to their own devices, get into trouble.

But that's not the case for the Eagles, where starting defensive end Juqua Parker has been arrested for possession of marijuana during the early stages of preseason practice at Lehigh University.

According to the Morning Call, Parker was a passenger in a vehicle that had been stopped for a traffic violation. He allegedly was found to be in possession of a small amount of marijuana.

If the allegation is accurate, it lends further credence to the reality that, once a player clears the early-season urine test for substances of abuse, the player has smoke as much pot as he wants until a month or so before the next season's test.

And it would be naive to think that marijuana smoking isn't prevalent in the NFL and other pro sports.

They pretty much let you smoke pot in the league except for certain points in the year.

Or unless you get busted. Now he will be facing more random test than normal because of this incident. Everything is ok until you get caught.

If you play for Pitt nothing will happen to you *cough* Holmes *cough* otherwise if he was already in the drug program he might have to serve a suspension after the legal proceeding are over.

In other words don't expect anything to happen right away.

I went through the military and never once got tested for pot. I have never heard of that happening to someone else. I had heard from one of my superiors that they only were testing the people they thought would definitely pass the test to make themselves look good. I wonder what that says about me

That said, I am sure this is like baseball and that the union warns people well before the tests. You only get caught if you are a moron.

Do i understand this right here: There is only one substance abuse test during the season. And the player even knows when it is ?

That must be either a mistake or a joke, right ????

Oh no, not marijuana...

You would think if it is not that big of a deal that players would not risk it.

I smoked for many years and I agree it is not a big deal so when the County started doing random testing I stopped smoking because it is not a big deal and clearly not worth losing my job over. Heck NFL has it easy compared to many places of employment.

I mean seriously. I just saw a guy get kicked out of the military for smoking weed, but you have people beating their wives, driving drunk, being pure alcholics and they get "help".

That might depend when you were in the military and where you were stationed.

While in Korea in the late 80's I think we were only tested once.
While in Ft Polk, Louisiana, my next duty station, we were tested once a month.

so is he gonna get suspended?

Probably not. Others have been busted and haven't been suspended for their 1st times.

oh boy, can't wait of the conspiracy-laden "the league hates us" crap.
