PFT: Former No. 3 Overall pick Trey Lance to hit free agency

Players don't have an automatic right to play. If he didn't do enough in preseason and practices to get his shot then he didn't earn his way on the field. I think fans tend to forget that coaches see more and work with players more than the opportunities fans get to see them
I happen to agree. I play guitar and I can tell just by handing you one if you can play it or not. It doesn't take a Carnegie Hall concert.

Having said that...if they had no intention of playing him they should have just cut him. I believe mismanagement of players hurt them (and the team) in several ways. The Dallas Cowboys seem proficient at "wasting" NFL careers. Certainly SOME team would have taken a bigger chance with him. Maybe?

I guess we'll find out soon enough.

Dallas wants to sign players at league minimum. 1M per year.

They can sign Lance. But will cost at least 5-8M per.

Otherwise draft a rook QB at 800k and keep Qrier for 1M
Lance can be signed for $1.125 million per season according to the CBA. No team is going to pay more than that for him. Where do you come up with “5-8M per”?

He’ll be paid about $75,000 per as the backup quarterback for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

I doubt he gets $5-8M unless its incentive based, but where are you getting that he has to sign for league minimum? It could be accurate, but hes a true UFA so I dont understand where that is coming from?

No team has to sign him at all. But he can’t be signed for less than that. He has not distinguished himself in four years to warrant any interest from an NFL team. His career is all but over.

Oh I got you, I misread your other post.

I would disagree though. I think there will be multiple teams in the bidding.

Most teams have three quarterbacks under contract that have accomplished more than Lance has in the last four seasons. Ironically, the Cowboys have only two QBs signed and Lance rejected an offer from Dallas. Any deal he gets at this point will be contingent on his making the team. He won’t be getting any guaranteed money.

“That’s why we gave a [fourth-round pick] for Trey. It seems like all the quarterbacks, even guys we have in the fourth round, go in the first. They always go so much higher than what you think,” Jones said

I guess that's why we gave a 4th for Jonathan Mingo. Grossly underperforming rookie receivers go for...much...higher.....than.....

Or, Jerry is an idiot and got fleeced by the 49ers. The league should have a policy to review trades made by special needs general managers like ours.
Mariota is one I would look at for backup or #2

oh, man, I still can't believe the future QB of our team is gone. he only needs another 4,5 years of playing time and experience to reach being a below average QB and we just let him walk...the dude can run. who cares about reading defense and throwing. just change our offense to wish bone and lets win a championship...we should bring him back for sure

Wouldn't mind Daniel Jones as a backup only. *ducks*
I dont think that is crazy at all. Veteran QB still in his 20s and can extend plays with his legs? Sign me up....I doubt he is anywhere close to being in the Cowboys budget though, he should demand high end backup money.

You make ridiculous points. I'm saying Jerry Jones is the root of everything gone bad for the Cowboys including signing Lance with no path to advance. You disagree then cut your own argument by disparaging Jerry Jones.
First, your point about Jerry being a problem is actually the "ridiculous point" because I never said he wasn't. I'm no Jerry fan, and never suggested I am, yet here you are making a "ridiculous point" by acting like I'm praising Jerry. But what you obviously, and ridiculously don't grasp is that thinking Jerry is bad for the team doesn't require having a negative reaction to every single thing he does.

Your second "ridiculous point" is thinking that because you weren't in the know means the Cowboys saw no path for Lance to advance. The Cowboy coaches work with and have opportunities to evaluate all year long. Nobody appointed you or any fan to be the one to do those evaluations. While you are working at your job, they were working at theirs, and they - not you - are charged with deciding if a player has earned playing time.

As for a path to advancement, are you talking about Dak already being on the team and the starting QB? If so, do you really believe a team shouldn't continually look for talent even where they may not see an immediate need? Do you think teams should ignore positions with an established starter until that guy is already injured or retired? I ask because if that's your belief that would be a "ridiculous point".

They had to pay him anyway, so why would they cut him and pay both him and another player to fill the 3rd QB role? Plus, I'm sure the plan when they signed him was for him to never play, but it's up to the player to earn that shot.
