Just saw him on NFL Network at the combine: he had a gut- not as bad as the picture here showed- but he definitly had not backed away from the dinner table.

ALl the pictures I have seen of all of the players- NONE of them looked ripped or in top shape. Every single lineman I saw had a gut. Even the DBs and LBs looked soft.
what o-lineman doesn't have a gut?

Yea some people seem to have the mistaken belief that these guys train to look like bodybuilders or models...it's just not the case. I work out pretty hard core, consistently, and intelligently and I eat way more cleanly than any of these college kids could or would, but I don't look like a pro bodybuilder either. People have a lot of unreasonable expectations. That said I don't have any idea of what Russell actually looked like, maybe he has gained too much weight, maybe he hasn't.

Yep, especially these kids coming out of college. As Parcells used to always say, rookies don't have the foggiest idea about proper nutrition.

He's got a bigger gut than I do and I'm a grandpa!

He is 15 to 20lbs from being the same weight as Jared Lorenzen. Granted he's 2" taller, but someone w/ that frame can put on the lbs pretty quickly if they are not careful.

I don't think his weight will be a problem for the first couple of seasons. It's after that I'd be concerned about.

If I were the raiders, I would try to trade down a couple spots, pick up a couple of picks and hope that Quinn's still available. If not, pick up Stanton in the later rounds and sign Bledsoe for a couple of years while he develops.

Players are willing to do most anything to avoid becoming a Raider.

(It didn't work for Janikowski)

Now it all starts to make sense... :laugh2:

Here's the thing, and I can't believe I didn't think to post this earlier. These guys typically lose 10-15 lbs during the season and a lot of that is muscle. The offseason is the only time they have to increase their muscle mass...to "bulk" as it's called. You'll get your fat loss and conditioning in during training camp and then you'll lose weight again during the season, so if you want to be stronger and bigger, you have to do that right now, in about a 3 month window.

Now as you mentioned, most of these kids (and people in general) have NO CLUE about how to go about eating correctly and not only that, they don't really have access to good, healthy food. All they know is that it takes a TON of calories to add muscle to an already muscular 250 lb frame (we're talking over 5000 calories a day). These guys who are often "genetically gifted" know that thanks to their high metabolisms, they will easily shed excess fat during the preseason, but it also makes it harder to gain muscle when you're training, especially if you're doing any type of cardio. So what do they do? They simply eat as much as possible and whatever they can. To them, a whopper is as good as a steak and veggies (well a couple whoppers).

So it's not so much an issue of being lazy as it is being misinformed (the "see food diet" is an old school bodybuilderr thing). When they are professionals and can afford to have somebody preparing and planning not only their own specific workouts (rather than a cookie cutter approach) but also their meals, they will have a lot easier time managing weight and muscle gain.

If Jared Lorenzon weighed 300 pounds at Kentucky as QB and lost weight, I guess Jamarcus can too.

He never tipped the scales at 300lbs. did he?

I always thought he put on more weight as a pro.

I don't disagree w/ anything you are saying, but it's hard to believe a program like LSU (considered a multi million dollar business) wouldn't have a nutritionist on staff to aid some of its star players.

It's not just a nutrionist, these guys are still in school and still can't afford much more than campus or fast food. Plus I bet they go out on the weekend (starts Thursday in college) and sit around with their buddies drinking beer and eating **** and watching sports with their boys). You got to remember in essence they're just college kids trying to enjoy the last few months of their "youth".

OTOH I don't know that I've ever heard of any college football program actually having a nutrionist at all anyway.

Oh no.... He was listed at 275 but he looked like he weighed more than most of his lineman. All fat too. But "The Battleship" had a rocket for an arm. Just no awareness or mobility. Thought he was Brett Favre

Then....

A NEW FAT ALBERT?

Our sources at the combine tell us that, although LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell might still be headed for a top-five spot in the draft, he was looking a little JaMeaty at his official weigh-in on Friday.

"He looked more like Charles Barkley than a football player," said the source of Russell, who tipped the scales at 265 pounds.

He had "a lot of loose tissue in the midsection" and looked like he hasn't seen a weight room in months, with "very little muscle definition for such a big guy."

It shouldn't be a problem if he's drafted by the Browns, since they're sure to eventually put him on the staph infection diet.

This guy has never been "TO" chiseled. I'm not seeing the big deal here. It must be the offseason. Right. That explains it. :) Russell will be a gamer at the next level.

A college athlete certainly doesnt have weekends off. To sit around drinking beer and watching games. I see the Terps playing on Saturdays mostly, and having class on Monday.

And college programs have strength and conditioning programs/coaches (especially the bigger programs), nutrition falls into that group. He looks big. Not conditioned at all from that pic. He just decided to not upgrade his status by coming in that big, and it makes him careless at this point.

If I was Brady Quinn i'd order pizzas and stuff and send it to Russells room.

By the looks of him he'll obviously eat it.
