FMIA Training Camp: Jerry Jones Still Believes; Shanahan on the SF Safety Net

Published August 21, 2023 01:26 AM
SEATTLE—The 80-year-old owner of the Dallas Cowboys stood outside their locker room Saturday evening before their preseason game against Seattle. Blue suit, light blue shirt, black dress shoes, Cowboy pin in the lapel. Classic Jerry Jones. The game has aged Jones, but his zeal for the game, even after 27 years of never reaching the NFC title game, never mind winning a fourth Super Bowl, is precisely the same as it’s been since he bought the franchise in 1989. He wants it, wants it bad, and thinks this team, after two straight 12-win seasons, is fit to win it all.

But he thinks that every year.

The difference, maybe, with Jerry Jones, is he’s unwilling to call a 12-5 season a failure.

“I know how hard it is to win one of those (a Super Bowl),” Jones said, straining a bit to be heard over the cacophonous music and the Cowboys fans shouting for him in the southeast end zone. “You shouldn’t give up the ghost because you fall short in a highly competitive league. Just because we haven’t won it in so long doesn’t make what we’ve done meaningless. And I think this year we’re in better position to win it than we have been in years. We have the team, and we have the quarterback.”

Well, I applaud Jerry that at his age he is able to get 50% of the equation right.

He's a salesman. One of the best but in the long run no different that the guy I just bought my new F150 from!
Him: "This is the best truck on the market, carries more cargo, rides the best, fewest problems of any truck on the market:
Me: Yeah, yeah, yeah, . . . I've done my research so just ease up on the BS and let's sign some paperwork !

I get tired of folks trying to pee on my boot and tell me it's raining. I ain't from Missouri but I'll just say . . . "Show me".

All in all Jerry is a good guy. He's good to folks and has little hate in him. If'n he'd let the Jimmy thing go and put him in that Ring of Cowboy Honor he could be considered a great guy. I think we can all overlook the hard drankin', the hoes , and the blow and agree he loves his players and along with the Cities of Arlington and Frisco goes the extra mile to provide them the best.

I hate to say this, but something is missing. Can't quite put my fingers on it but I'm not feeling a sense of urgency from him or Dak in this interview. Let me put it another way.......I'm not feeling the type of passion/fire we see in Parsons. JMO

Jerry said it himself - his goal is to remain 'relevant and interesting'. No need to hate stating what is evident to anyone paying attention.

From the article:
“Still trust Dak to win the Super Bowl here?”

“Very much. Very much. We’re relying on him, and I feel very good about that. His preparation, his presence, how the team responds to him. I believe he will get us there.”
It has been apparent since late October 2016. Dak Prescott has 100% support from Jerry Jones. He has demonstrated that form of backing since he bought the team, especially at the quarterback position.

Sports talking heads capitalize on making fodder of the topic. Fans are divided and polarized by it. The Prescott era was not the first time these circumstances have happened.

The media puts a target on the quarterback and use bazookas. Fans are belligerent towards fellow fans for cheering on the quarterback. Neither media nor fans have any say so as to what happens with the position.

One person does in the entire world. He is the obvious individual who the media treats with kid gloves. He is the bystander fans, who are dissatisfied with the position, avoid pointing fingers at and keep lobbing grenades at folks with zero control over anything.

It must be nice being Jerry Jones.

This is the beauty from the article:

I told Jones what I wrote after the game: “Those are 48 seconds of Jerry Jones’ life he’ll never get back.”

“I can live with those circumstances,” Jones said. “Those 48 seconds I truly believe if we won that day we could have won the Super Bowl.”

I mean it could be Jerry believes his own lies. I can't say either way but expecting at least half of the Cowboys fans that are disgruntled to believe them is a hard sell.

When he is dead and gone, and you end up seeing how good he was from an owner pov you will have a different view…:Jerry’s only downfall has been not relinquishing the gm role; however over the past decade will Mclay and others have begun to fill that role from a talent pov…this is why we now have one of the most talented teams in the nfl, a top defense and a legit chance at 3 playoff seasons in a row and a deep playoff run.

Don’t let the two decades post the super bowls blind you to the changes he has gone through in the last decade. This team has been run so much better and the talent and wins show, next up will translate to more playoff success

This is a really bad crock, if a fan really thinks his chosen team are losers, why is he so fully filled with himself to even stick around just to complain?

To be smart?

If Jerry Jones totally relinquished his self-appointed title of GM today, his net worth would not decrease. He would remain super wealthy. He would continue increasing his net worth annually in Forbes magazine.

His mindset will not allow him to do that. He wants both fortune and exaggerated fame. Hiring a qualified football executive as general manager would promote a different football operations philosophy that could improve coaching and roster alike.

However, that change in personal thinking would only provide Jones with simple fame. He does not only wish admiration as an owner who wins Super Bowls. He wants the adoration of being the only person who can accomplish the feat.

This should always be considered with the false assumption of greed. He cares for more than just money. And that has been his personal managerial flaw over the decades since Jimmy Johnson's departure.

Will this season and the years to come be any different if he keeps a vise grip on the GM position? Only time will say otherwise.

Yet there are numerous posters here in the fanzone who tell Micah to shut up every time he does an interview or sends a tweet.

There’s just no winning this type of thing.

Don't take it personal, but I can't help but laugh at anyone brave enough to defend Jerry. This was almost vomit inducing...
