Defensive tackle La’Roi Glover, a force for much of the decade, has decided to call it quits after 13 years in the NFL.
“I’m blessed that I was able to play this game that I love for so long,” the six-time Pro Bowler said. “It has been such an incredible journey. The players, coaches, and front office staff in the cities I’ve played have all given me so many great memories.
“I still love the game with the same passion I had as a young player in high school, so I plan to always be attached to it in some way, whether commentating, working in the front office, or scouting. But who knows what opportunities await in the next chapter of my life?”
Glover broke in with the Raiders as a fifth-round draft pick in 1996, and they cut him during the 1997 preseason.
He landed with the Saints, where his career blossomed in five seasons. After that, Glover signed as an unrestricted free agent with the Cowboys in 2002.
The switch from a 4-3 attack to a 3-4 look in 2003 didn’t knock Glover off the roster; he remained in Dallas through the 2005 season, making the Pro Bowl every year.
Glover finished his career with the Rams, spending three years in St. Louis.
Along the way, Glover appeared in every game of 11 seasons, and 15 games of a twelfth. In eight years, he started every game; from 1998 through 2007, he started all but four games that his teams played.
Though the credentials likely won’t secure a spot in Canton, Glover was a very good player, and his durability over the years was remarkable.
