McCarthy was not happy with the state of the Cowboys' kicking competition. Rookie Jonathan Garibay and veteran Lirim Hajrullahu are competing, but both of them are struggling with accuracy issues.

McCarthy stated that one of those two kickers has to "grab the rope" to win the kicker battle. Thus far, he feels that neither one has.

“These two are competing for a job,” McCarthy said, via the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “At some point they got to start getting comfortable and making kicks more consistently. That is just stating the facts. At the end of the day, the rope is here. Someone has to grab it.”


Kicking was a bit of an issue for the Dallas Cowboys last season. Former starter Greg Zuerlein missed six field goals and a career-high six extra point attempts.

Maybe Jerry should invest some money into the position?
Both were undrafted free agents...........

I mean, a good amount of kickers are UDFA but it felt odd at how lax they were in trying to address the position. Don't need to spend big bucks and get another Vandermiss or Zursuck but they really put all their eggs into a recent UDFA and a former UDFA with no vet competition.

80% of this board couldn't wait to get rid of Zuerlein. He was bad last year dont get me wrong, but be careful what you ask for. It took him about 15 minutes to find a new job for a reason. Very few reliable kickers around.

Well to be fair Hajrullahu is 32, has played in the NFL just last year and spent years in the CFL. He could be considered vet competition.

I had hopes for Garibay. He was a decent college prospect and our only real hope for having a decent K this year. Hajrullahu isn't going to be any solution
