Miles Austin working out with Cowboys

Posted by Michael David Smith on April 13, 2010 3:30 PM ET
Yesterday we noted that Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Miles Austin was sitting out workouts. But today Austin is back with the team.

Todd Archer of the Dallas Morning News reports that Austin is at Valley Ranch working out with teammates in the voluntary offseason conditioning program after spending the last two weeks working out on his own in California.

Austin was tendered at the first- and third-round level, which means it's highly unlikely that any team would sign him to an offer sheet before the deadline Thursday. It also means that signing his tender would guarantee him a one-year deal worth $3.168 million -- a far cry from the $10 million or so he could make as a franchise player if this were an ordinary year. So much for the uncapped year being a bonanza for the players.

Austin is coming off a season in which he caught 81 passes for 1,230 yards and 11 touchdowns and was far more productive than fellow Cowboys receiver Roy Williams, who got paid far more money.

This is good to hear, although I wasn't too worried about it in the first place.

The worry over Miles Austin's whereabouts can end.

The Pro Bowl wide receiver has been at Valley Ranch this week, working out with teammates in the voluntary off-season conditioning program. Austin spent the last couple of weeks working out in California.

A restricted free agent, Austin is free to sign with another team until Thursday, however the Cowboys have the right to match any offer or receive first- and third-round picks in return. Without a long-term deal, Austin will make $3.168 million this year.

The Cowboys would like to sign Austin and he would like to remain a Cowboy for the long-term but the talks have been limited mostly because of a lack of a collective bargaining agreement between the league and NFL Players Association.

Austin caught 81 passes for 1,230 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2009, earning a trip to his first Pro Bowl. He was a restricted free agent last year as well but was a mainstay in the conditioning program.

The funny thing about Austin's early absence this year is the fact that he was a regular in the weight room prior to the official beginning of the conditioning program
