It’s fitting, we suppose, that during this constant airing of grievances by the NFL and its players, an incoming rookie has performed an unprecedented feat of strength.

Blaine Sumner, who played college football at the Colorado School of Mines, reportedly bench-pressed 225 pounds a whopping 52 times on Monday at his Pro Day workout.

52 times at 225 lbs is alot!!!

I know most people here have lifted weights in the past or maybe currently train. But a bench press at 225 lbs. is a real benchmark for strength (Its not a weight that ANYONE can just get up under and push up).

An average guy, who's not a collegiate or professional athlete, can probably bench 225. One time...10 times....whatever

A guy who works on strength training, and works out on a regular basis can probably get it 10-20 times. Or more.

But 52 times is just outrageous!!! To me, anything over 30 is abnormal strength. I know alot of those guys at the combine get over 30 reps, but they have had 4 years of a highschool training program and 4 years of a college strength program to get strong.

Also these linemen know the bench is like the 40 yard dash to a DB or WR...so they train for months on the bench leading up to the combine.

That is a lot of strength and also stamina. 52 of any weight is difficult just because of the muscle fatigue and lactic acid build up. Whats up with this guy other than being strong as a bull?

Sumner, a 6'2", 330-lb. defensive lineman who hails from Conifer, Colo. (Conifer High School), eclipsed the NFL Combine record with 52 reps of 225 lbs. on the bench press.

Sumner earned First Team All-RMAC, First Team NFF All-Colorado and Third Team Don Hansen All-Super Region Three accolades following the conclusion of his senior season. Sumner had 32 total tackles (14 solo), led CSM with three blocked kicks and registered 6.5 tackles for a loss last season. Sumner, who added three passes defended and two fumble recoveries, had 10 carries for 19 yards (1.9 avg.) as a short-yardage specialist on the CSM offense. A Pre-Season All-RMAC selection, Sumner was second on the team with four rushing TD.

True...52 reps at any weight is hard.

NT? maybe why not take a chance on him in round 7.

I want him just because he attended the Colorado School of Mines.

NT prospect for sure. With that size and being only 6'2" and weighing 330, added to his obvious strength.

Been even better if it was the school of MIMES :laugh2:

Larry Allen bench pressed 700 lbs on video. what was his combine bench press total?

:laugh2:[/quote]

He wasn't even extending his arms on most of those... Compare the speeded up ones to the end ones where he's actually locking out. I doubt those even would've counted at the combine.

I'd disqualify him based on the choice of that awful white spandex outfit alone.

That's not really true either. An "average" guy that weighs 250 pounds maybe. Not an average guy that weighs 170 or 180.

Yeah, he wasn't locking out, plus he seemed to be bouncing it a good bit off of his chest. Another no-no was that he wasn't keeping his butt on the bench (back flat against bench).

Having said all of that though, there is no doubt that the guy is very, very strong in both his upper and lower body. Decent explosion too for a big guy and he has a perfect build for NT. Plus, he moves well for a big ugly.

I wouldn't be upset at all if we brought him in with a late pick. You never know.

Vanilla Gorilla. :laugh2:
