PFT: Romo says he'll be a better leader

But yet he still makes the same mistakes. He may be taking blame at times for poor play in a press conference, but what is his preparation for correcting it on the field?

It depends which mistakes we're talking about. Locking in on one receiver and throwing into double coverage gets talked about a lot, but that had never been a problem before the end of this year, and I think that was a new mistake for a new reason.

Throwing picks in general is another thing he gets criticized for, but his TD/INT ratio didn't really change very much from the fantastic year he had last year. One difference may be that the picks came in bunches in 07 (Buffalo), so the picks he threw this year might have had a bigger impact on close games, but on the whole, they guy turns the ball over because he's enormously productive throwing the ball and the interceptions are proportional with his production.

The big difference in his play this year was in fumbles. Clearly, he has to take better care of the ball in the pocket. Whether it's throwing it away, knowing when not to make a play, or fixing some of the blocking problems we've got, that problem needs to be fixed for us to improve. His second big issue this year was in converting first downs. He set a torrid pace in 07 and wasn't able to match it last year. That's another 'new mistake,' though, so it's not evidence that Tony won't work or can't learn.

The stuff about his preparation and willingness to work is all empty noise. It's the worst kind of empty noise, too, because we'd have the exact opposite sorts of sounds going on if literally one or two plays broke differently last year. If you guys can't remember or don't realize how much better Romo made this team when he returned, injured, to the starting lineup, then there's no hope for any of you, ever. You're all more or less dead to me. The guy needs to play better, but the team has so many more significant problems that are less visible and more important, it's a shame we spend so much time talking about superficial hearsay.

Theo posted the stats pre and post injury fumbles. Who would have thought that a hand injury would make it harder to hold onto the ball?

NO his leadership and practice habits make him fumble we all know that. Oh and TO.

Romo doesn't deserve "all the blame" so don't think that. That is not what i am saying. But he has really regressed as a QB and has yet to come into a leader role for the offense. Romo didn't get as much criticism as he is this year because the last 2 years he has been a savior to this team. But now how quickly things change. In his first time as a starter when he took over for Bledsoe he was givin' leeway because it was his first time starting. So people really didn't cry so much about his turnovers because after all he led us to the playoffs when we had no hope in Bledsoe. His first year starting a whole season he went on to break records and had a great year. People who want to blame Romo for the loss against the giants in the playoffs are just ignorant. But this year is his third year starting. He should be wise to the game to know not to make dumb mistakes at times where he has looked like a rookie. This year he has throw a lot of timely critical interceptions where in the past he has not. That is why people are worried about Romo

I think part of the regression were more physical than mental, Romo took a beating this year unlike he had seen the 1.5 he has been starting

I think it was both. But you know at the same time look at the situations Garrett was putting Romo in. The guys thumb is messed up but Garrett wants to throw it deep? Garrett did not help Romo at all this year which was the sole reason Romo regressed.

The DMN is running this as well.

Actions matter now. We have heard all the words.

It'll be months before we can tell.

:hammer:

Especially Romo is talking like he invented the QB position. Time to shut up and show me what you are made of!

I swear, by some of the comments I'm reading its like you guys are saying Romo should not do anything except sit on a chair all day, practice yelling, and watching game film.

Is he not allowed to have a life?

Wait, the instructions you guys sent me with the tin-foil hat in my GROTR kit said we bag on Romo because of what he says in press conferences. *Now* we want him to shut up and play? I thought the 'shut-up-and-play' instructions went with the GROPC kit? Now I have no idea what's really going on. Somebody PM me and tell me which direction we're all supposed to be running in, ok?

I think we assume he wanted Romo to go deep there are more than 1 option on most pass plays.

LOL!

That's the best response anyone has had on all these topics in a long time.

As long as we can get a pinkie promise it's all gooood...

Please direct me to where he's made any sort of claims that have ever actually even remotely hinted at the idea that he invented the QB position.

I'd be interested in hearing those interviews.

Talk is cheap, Romo needs to produce on the field and stop the careless turnovers come december!

But Jerry and Wade don't need to stop their mistakes or correct their stupid moves?

I don't wear tinfoil, I just chew it.

nom nom nom

I've come to the conclusion, that no matter what he does, he can't win with some.

For that matter, no matter what anyone on the team says positive to try to make the team better, will be taken with a grain of salt thru the offseason.

Not sure what they could do or say to convince some they are trying to improve.

I forget which thread I said it in, but Tony Romo needs someone in his rear view mirror. His job is not under any kind of threat from Brad Johnson, Richard Bartel, or Brooks Bollinger. He knows that. Whether he intends to be on cruise control or not, it is easy to shift into that habit. In fact, it's human nature.

But there's nothing like a hungry player behind you to keep you hungry yourself.

Backup QB is one of my 3 main keys to the 2009 off season. Personally Bollinger and Johnson would both be longshots to make the roster if I had my druthers.

I dunno. Its kind of hard to see anyone as a serious threat when you just got paid 60 million.

I don't think anyone brought in would really push Tony enough to improve. Tony really is good enough to where he won't be beat out by anyone Dallas could bring in.

He needs a hardass of a coach to tell him hes not gods gift to football. Someone to point out and harp on every single mistake he makes and never let up until he quits making those mistakes. Tony needs someone to sit there and keep him grounded.

Get R. Lee Ermey to jump him at every turn and Tony will be just fine.

Drew Bledsoe didn't think Tom Brady was a threat because of his contract either. By the time he got here and had lost jobs to Brady and Losman he knew better.

If he had competition and was still lazy, bench him.
